Interesting that you picked "The Prince of Tides"...one of my all time favorite reads. The movie so disappointed me....especially Barbra S...all I can remember are her fingernails!
Oh, I SO agree with this! Loved, loved, loved the book. The movie, by comparison, was a disgrace!

Then my ? is...it doesn't ruin the book for you?

Oh no! It kinda made the book come to life. Although Ralph Fiennes can make about anything come to life!
Oh, that is one of my all-time favorite movies, ever. Ever!
And I haven't read the book, but now I'm thinking I will, even though I typically don't read a book after the movie, but you've convinced me, jdarg. I can do it, I can do it!

So here we are at the beach (last week) and I called home to check in with Fyl, our 17 year old daughter who was holding down the fort. It was about 10:30 pm or so. "Getting ready for bed?" I ask. "No, I'm downtown." "DOWNTOWN?? WHAT ARE YOU DOING DOWNTOWN ON A SCHOOLNIGHT??"

Harry Potter, that's what. Fyl and half the high school population of Indianapolis were all downtown for the midnight screening of the movie. Fyl said it was excellent and all the reviews I heard on the radio (we don't read the paper while we're on beachtime) corresponded with her opinion. Merman and I can't wait to see it.

I have to admit that I was coerced into reading the Harry Potter series by Fyl, who harangued and harangued me until I picked one up. I was hooked! My favorite was the third, in which Harry got to know his guardian. Something about that relationship tugged at my heartstrings--the orphan boy longing for parental love and security, and finding it in the best friend of his parents. So poignant and sadly doomed.

I haven't been as crazy about the movies as I have the books. I don't think the casting is exactly right. This latest one, though, is supposed to be the one where they got it right, so we will see!

About books being translated into movies--only rarely have I thought the movie was better, but when I have to say it's magic when it works. "House of Sand and Fog" was one in which the movie fleshed out the book beautifully, and it was mesmerizing.

Loved that book! Still haven't seen the movie, though.

Dear Miss Kitty--this is as good as I can do right now. We arrived home a day late to a house that has NO HEAT! The furnace is on the fritz so I can't sit for hours talking on the computer (like I never do that... :D ) because it's too damm cold. I have on thermal underwear and a big heavy sweater and if that repairman doesn't arrive soon I'm going to have to start doing calistetics to heat up. Let's see, I could do weight-lifting with my daughter's collection of Harry Potter hardbacks. The last two books are real heavyweights, should work...

You're all so nice to welcome me back home! It's nice to be missed.

The repairman is fixing the furnace as we speak so I'm warming up and planning to write a "trip report" about our week at the beach (I tell ya, SoWal in the autumn is a treat not to be missed. :D )
