A girl that I went to high school with has a 4 year old daughter. She went to bed last night with a stomach virus. Her mom checked on her at 3am this morning and she was fine. This morning, they found her on the floor and she had passed away. They don't know what happened at the moment but a friend also recently heard that a child in Auburn got a virus and was dead within a day or two. The virus had caused fluid to build up around her heart and they didn't catch it in time. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers. When my mother checked on them this morning they were doing "fair" but she said when she went back at lunchtime they were not doing well at all.

Beachyteachy, that is absolutely horrifying. I am so sorry for their loss and am keeping them in my prayers. I cannot even imagine.

Please let us know, if you find out, what happened to the sweet little girl. The small ones can't always tell us what is wrong so it's good for parents to learn as much as possible.

Oh no! SO sad.

Yes, actually I have heard of it. A child on vacation in Watercolor (not sure exactly, maybe Watersoud) died of this...umm... last year? It wasn't the first time I'd heard of it either. I can't remember for the life of me what's it's called though. Apparently you just have no clue that it's as serious as it is until it's pretty much too late. There is a treatment though if ID'd early, the problem is knowing what it is.

pericarditis? If that's it, it's more common than you think. The board's on-call physician needs to be summoned.

Here's an article about the girl in Auburn.

Myocarditis was the dx...
which coincidentally I believe can be caused by coxsackie virus (HFMD). I know HFMD is going around out here as I know two people whose children have had it in the past few weeks. Thankfully mine haven't. Not saying she had HFMD, obviously she hadn't come down with the related sores, but just throwing that out there as something to watch out for. The only prevention is to wash your hands OFTEN.. soap and warm water.

My perfect beach
In my prayers, as well. There is no greater loss than the loss of a child.
