jdarg, some of us would say tomotoes as opposed to tomatoes:cool:

I'm not calling the whole thing off. Let's keep chatting about tomatoes, tomotoes, timitoes, whatever. Love 'em.

OK, now I'm into it and will try growing them again.

Does everybody use those strange looking cages, those inverted pointed cone things? And if so, how do you use those? Or better yet, how do you keep them from drooping to the ground from all the heavy tomatoes?!

AND... when I tried a few years ago, the tomatoes got gigantic before they turned red and then they split! (I don't have a green thumb.)

I like Brandywines, the stripey ones (names??), and a really pink one that is an heirloom (I have CRS disease today- sorry!) And Beefsteaks.
I like grape tomatoes--and my kids eat those like there's no tomorrow when I use them in tomato salad! Yum!

Holy cow, Unplugged!!! "Tried your hand"?
That's a mutant you've got there (I mean that as a compliment!!)
I grow in containers, too, and I've gotten some really tall plants, but I am not sure I've ever reached your heights.
Last year one got to the lower part of the roof, but our plant was not nearly as full as yours. Didn't prune it much, though.

Johnrudy, I had the split thing happen to me with some new variety I tried last year, it was one of those heirloom types. It's unattractive but if you eat it right away it's okay, I guess.

This year I am back to the old familiar Celebrity and yellow pear. The other variety I like is Champion, but I have not seen it out here.

Thank you Paula: I planted 4 plants - A type of 'Big Boy' variety and also Cherry tomatoes. The program I used should work with most any tomato variety to produce 100 - 300 pounds from one container

jdarg: 'Feeding program Ancient Chinese Secret' as WU might say :rotfl:

Seriuosly though, I really didn't know Jack about growing them, but careful pruning, feeding (with Ferti-lome product) and LOTS of water & sunshine seemed to do the trick :dunno:

And I think the aggresive pruning directed more energy to the fruit.

Thanks, I think I'll plan on two different early harvest types -- big boy or early girl type and a grape tomato. And one or two zucchini plants. All in pots. What fun.

Ain't nothin' in the world that I like better
Than bacon & lettuce & homegrown tomatoes
Up in the mornin' out in the garden

Get you a ripe one don't get a hard one
Plant `em in the spring eat `em in the summer
All winter with out `em's a culinary bummer
I forget all about the sweatin' & diggin'
Everytime I go out & pick me a big one

Homegrown tomatoes homegrown tomatoes
What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money can't buy
That's true love & homegrown tomatoes

You can go out to eat & that's for sure
But it's nothin' a homegrown tomato won't cure
Put `em in a salad, put `em in a stew
You can make your very own tomato juice
Eat `em with egss, eat `em with gravy
Eat `em with beans, pinto or navy
Put `em on the site put `em in the middle
Put a homegrown tomato on a hotcake griddle

If I's to change this life I lead
I'd be Johnny Tomato Seed
`Cause I know what this country needs
Homegrown tomatoes in every yard you see
When I die don't bury me
In a box in a cemetary
Out in the garden would be much better
I could be pushin' up homegrown tomatoes
