New York City's homeless relocated to Florida, other states - OrlandoSentinel.com NEW YORK - New York City is buying one-way plane tickets for homeless families to leave the city.

It's part of a Bloomberg administration program to keep the homeless out of the expensive shelter system, which costs $36,000 a year per family. More than 550 families have left the city since 2007. All it takes is for a relative to agree to take them in.

The city employs a travel agency for domestic travel and the Department of Homeless Services handles international travel.

City officials say there are no limits on where a family can be sent and families can reject the offer.

Families have been sent to 24 states and five continents, mostly to Puerto Rico, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

City officials say none of the relocated families have returned to city shelters.

Right here!
Clearly the solution to this in Florida is to build a more expensive shelter system, so we then have an excuse to load these homeless back on planes and ship them someplace else. :D

Who knows, maybe without government hand outs they'll come here and find work? Be interesting if we could track these folks and see where they are in a year or two.

I guess you missed the part about that a family member has to agree to take them in, so no, they do not go into a shelter. Bloomberg is as capitalistic as one gets, as far as Mayors are concerned, so he is not dumping the cost on another State.
(also notice that people have been sent to other Countries)

It's a smart business move. They do track some of the families.

There's something kinda "Midnight Cowboy" about this program.

I guess FAR may soon be able to go back to boasting that 1,000 people are moving to Florida everyday.

:D
