... that I can't even see straight.
I just talked to my mom, and she told me that my dad and my brother were both victims of unneccessary police brutality (as if there was NECCESSARY brutality) yesterday. My dad got the brunt of it, but my brother feels guilty, since his little prank is what started the whole thing.
They were at a concert yesterday, and Dad, Wes, and my cousin all had to use the restroom. As Wes was exiting the porta-potty, he decided it'd be funny to moon our cousin. Well, the power-hungry event security didn't take too kindly to that and told Wes he had to leave the premises. My dad tried to get back to my mom to tell her what happened, and when he was talking to her, he evidently leaned just a little too close to one of the policemen, who drove his knee into my father's back and took him to the ground. My mom told me that there were six cops on my dad, and they were hitting him and shoving him. They hit him so hard at one point that his head started bleeding, and he has numerous bruises and bumps. He also just had back surgery last month, and the force with which the guy kneed him could've seriously jeapordized his recovery.
What's even worse is that the cops tried to charge my dad with assault on an officer (even though my dad wisely didn't fight back. All he did was yell, "Stop! You don't have to do this!") and being drunk in public. (He'd had two beers, and I know my dad.... two beers isn't going to do much.) They took him to the police station and ended up letting him go, but they're demanding that my family pay $96 to get out of this whole mess. My parents say they'll pay it just to put the whole thing behind them, but they don't want to. They're pissed off, and my dad feels violated and humiliated. He's getting all his wounds checked out tomorrow and he has a consultant with an attorney next week to see if he has a viable case against the police department.
My question is this: should they fight it, or should they just bite the bullet and pay the money? I say they should fight it. Even if they get nothing from it, at least they can get the word out about how inhumanely they were treated.
