I have had a Canon Powershot A510 for 2 years+ and it takes some great pictures and a LOT of abuse. Goes to the beach, mountains, in the winter snow, and everywhere else in between. I did get a much bigger memory card a year or so ago, but that is the only issue I've had and that's because I take SO many pictures.

It's not small enough to fit in a pants pocket or clutch purse, but works fine is a coat pocket or larger bag.

This might be a deal breaker. I need it to fit in my favorite clutch. Maybe I'll just bring it with me to make sure it fits...I'm such a priss. I make fun of people that do this!

Definitely take your favorite purse with you to see if it fits. Who cares - odds are that there will be someone nearby doing something stupider. :D

Might want to warn the salesperson you're checking if it fits so you don't get busted for shoplifting!

y My daughter has a sony, it's cute, small (she is a Pris, too :D) and makes great photos. She made this one from a moving car.

If you are worried about the battery, go with the SD1000[tiny]2.5 inch screen plus viewfinder for use under extreme glare as on the beach, or the SD750 3 inch monitor, newer model tiny as well. Both have lithium ion batteries that hold up well. With these models you will not have image stabilization which allows sharp photos under conditions that would not otherwise be possible. The a570 models take 2 AAs which is good because, given an emergency, they are obtainable everywhere and most rechargers hold 4 batteries at a time . You'll always have 2 spares. That's if you want to lug the extras around with you. The A570 has a very long sequence of 8-10 seconds to recharge the flash if the batteries are in any condition but near fresh, and this can prove annoying. The SDs recycle faster because of their lithium ion batteries. The A570/is will give you more flexibilty, but the SD models will be easier to carry........and drop.....their slippery dimensions andshould not be passed around in a bar unless you want to bounce one. Hope that helps.

All these Canons take SD memory cards, which are cheap and easy to find. 1 gig cards are 10-15 dollars now.

Sorry, was thinking you were talking about video cameras. It's the video camera where you need to know what type of format.

True dat! I have a Sony 717. It shoots MPEGs which work fine with any of the Microsoft movie maker products. I know other brands shoot AVI files or MOV files which are Quicktime format. That's where the battle starts between Mac and PC users!
