Scooterbug -- I've been wanting to do a train trip forever. Here's the trip I've planned -- get on the train in NOLA, and head up to Chicago. Spend a couple of days in Chicago -- take the boat tour of architecture, do the foodie restaurants, then fly home.

Put it on the schedule! I SO want to do NOLA and the arch tour! AA used to have a direct VPS to Chicago flight, but it got cut.

We used to do the overnight trains in Europe to save on hotels too - never had any problems (the conductors were pretty protective of us and would only let families or other females in our sleepers) and I never saw a Gypsy on a train (they were busy robbing people on the bus and exposing themselves in front of churches), but we learned the hard way that you don't take 2 night trains in a row for a day trip to use up your rail pass because you will be useless the next day.

Did you get a good nights sleep? ;-)

Wait, is this the sleep thread? :D

I love trains but know what is sad about passenger train service, other than the fact that it is run by the Government? Amtrak pulls passenger trains off to a side track to allow freight trains to pass. Just think: laundry detergent and mops are priorities over human passengers. Sorta tells you the state of passenger trains in this country.

The NOLA train to ATL ...

Wedding was planned for June 20. Church and country club were reserved. Then we had a little surprise in the fall prior to that. Took the train from NOLA to ATL to tell Mom that we had to move the wedding to an earlier date. We could have driven, but as goofy teenagers we thought that the train would be romantic. Really scary ride. The woman across the aisle from us kept pulling gross food out of her bag and offering it to us.

Long story short is that something happened on the train, so we just said  to Mom.

We didn't really care how nasty the train was on our way back to NOLA.
