Midland and Odessa Texas. Ugh! Ugliest place on earth! I drove through there when I was moving myself to Scottsdale, AZ in 1988. I don't know how those people can live there. Brown, ugly, sad looking.

Other than that, I can always find something I love about some area.

I've got relatives around there. It is pretty brown. A lightning storm there is something to behold though.

Sitka, Alaska. Maybe I missed something but what I saw of it had been transformed to cater to cruiseship crowds. I felt like they had let their beautiful heritage get buried under t-shirt and novelty stores.

Oh, you did miss a lot. I was lucky. took the ferry into Sitka and spent time with my SIL's brother...he took me hiking in the most wonderful area--all the way to the top of a mountain where we saw bald eagles nesting...it was gorgeous; then, he caught salmon and cooked them--the local part of Sitka is fabulous. I know what you mean, though, if all you saw were the cruiseships and the immediate port area. Too bad. It does have some nice areas with beautiful trees.

Gatlinburg in the summer is definitely a gridlock of traffic, much like the beach area during the summer or Easter week.

Off season is the time to go and if you can't, then avoid Gatlinburg completely and take the scenic route into the park through Townsend, no traffic and very beautiful.

As to dining the Burning Bush Restuarant, Brass Lantern, Calhoun's, Wild Plum Tea Room, Park Grill, Peddler Steakhouse and Corky's are great places to eat.

Death Valley Cal. The Summer of '01 was a bummer.
A year-round course but the summers can be extremely hot. It sports the distinction of being the lowest course in the world (214 feet below sea level). Water comes into play on 10 of the 18 holes. Walking is permitted. Half-price green fees May -Oct. due to summer temps that could reach over 120 degrees. This was July & I saw people playing golf. The temp. the day we toured was 126 with 30 mph winds.
The next day we went to Mt. Charlston north of Las Vegas & the temp. was 46 with snow on the ground.
Sometimes the Wild West really is wild.

Yes, I've heard that. Obscure, as my sister would say.

You surprise me, Johnrudy. I thought for sure you'd say "SoWal" since for as long as you've been on the message board for SoWal, you've never been to SoWal. :dunno:

Mermaid, I can't believe you would say such an inconsiderate thing like that to Johnrudy! What was the purpose....your comment has nothing to do with the question you "presented" to people who choose to read and/or post to your thread.

WHO CARES if someone has never been to SoWal, but is a member and posts! :dunno:

God Bless you Johnrudy I don't know how you take that meanness sitting down!!! Just take the higher road. I am shocked and sick of comments being made to other sowal members that do not reflect the attitude that most people have here in SOWal. I've had it up to my neck and I'm not going to let it go anymore when it is so apparent how the poster was commenting in a negative way. I think we all need to think before we type...."could this hurt someone", and if so it hurts the whole board!
