I think it is important to note that one would have to know (be familiar with) each candidate before one could make that "snap-judgment" of a choice. It sounds as though many people are still learning about the possible choices. I have studied every candidate enough to make an informed "snap-judgment" decision, and all the new information is just more confusing, but entertaining.

Not to be a smart-aleck, but isn't this contradictory? Familiar as in "I saw that dude on the news last week while I was vacuuming", or as in reading their websites, or as in reading what their opponents have to say...?

I'm not sure all New Yorkers would agree with Rudy's heroism with regards to 9/11

When I speak of "heroism" I meant from the standpoint of bringing back some semblence of normalcy to the city which I do not think many (even firefighters) dispute. One much also bear in mind the emotion attached. I am by no means endorsing Guiliani for President.
I think this article gives a balanced perspective.

wow, I have always been in awe of Guiliani's leadership and achievements as Mayor of NYC, before, during and after 9/11. any leader making hard decisions will undoubtably be opposed for some of his decisions by certain groups, individuals, etc. but he certainly did perform his duty.

Familiar, as in understanding a little bit of their history, stated beliefs, and real insight with some of the problems/concerns. Many people will take the first candidate to ring an emotional bell, and never even look at the other candidates. If you look at only options A and B, and choose A as the better of the two, what if option E was better than both? I think that you have to know a little (be familiar) about each of the options to be able to make an accurate judgment. I would venture to guess that less than 15% of voters will learn something about each of the candidates.

I was wondering because I'm kind of the opposite. I will dump the ones who ring my emotional bell the wrong way. When I say "Candidate X scares me," I'm not entirely kidding--I don't think I ever quite get over that snap judgment.

Then I choose from whomever is left by becoming familiar with them. At some point, all but one will scare me, which is convenient. (And it's really, really convenient that SO many of them scare me already!)

this is so totally the case, at least with me. I'm really scared of almost all except 2 or 3.

I guess the question you have to ask is are you scared of the candidates because of the candidates, or the press? Again, some people couldn't even list the candidates by name, so they weren't even scared of the candidates. They are just completely unaware. Even with Sen Clinton (and she scares me like you are talking about), I still look up her info, to know for certain WHY she scares me. Gut instinct on those things usually hold true, as is mentioned in Blink, but I just like to be sure for myself.

Hey, I thought Ron Paul was going to be left out of the debates. What happened? He is on there. Thankfully, it isn't on Fox, which I don't receive.

Just gut feeling, mostly. But that's a good point--I know that the press can edit and spin a perfectly innocent clip to make it look like something awful.

But with the candidates who scare me initially, the feeling almost always intensifies the more I learn, even if I learn it from their own websites. In the last presidential election, I remember thinking how creepy Edwards was to me, and everything I have heard from then until the present has only backed that up. I doubt I could love that man at this point even if he pulled my Momma from a burning car.
