Our best friend in Ocean Springs had swim with his mother and his two dogs from their home. His mother nearly drown but both made it to a neighbor's rooftop. He lost his cars, his house, but is glad he has his dogs - he'll be staying with for a while.

Glad they are safe. What an experience. Why didn't they evacuate? I read some people didn't think it would affect them if they were several miles inland. ( Bret Farve's mother for one)

Many did not evacuate because they thought "If I can make it through Camille, I can make it through anything".

Lesson - Never stay in the path of a cat 5. Which really means cat 3 because you never know when one can strengthen from a 3 to a 4 or 5 in a very short time, and then it's too late.

And remember those poor souls from Camille..."We're staying and having a Hurricane Party!" I was 16 at the time and the stories/photos from Camille have never left me.

I just read stories about two hospitals in downtown New Orleans that have had no help at all. Last night one of the nurses was on the phone with CNN crying....

Why isn't the country giving as much attention to this situation as they are in Iraq? When they needed to find Bin Laden or Sadaam Husein, they were so proud to show how advanced all their technology is with radar and sonar and God knows what else, we can pinpoint a bombing with "pinpoint accuracy." Why then can't we get help into a major American City like New Orleans faster? 30 people in a nursing home died, critically ill patients are sitting on a hospital rooftop for two days now, waiting for a rescue that still hasn't come. Why can't we give these rescues half as much attention as we give Iraq every day?

I heard Bush on t.v. this morning, he said they (the people in peril in NO) should know that "America is behind them." I'm sure that is so comforting for the person in ICU at the hospital in New Orleans whose been laying in their own feces for three days WAITING for help to arrive, or the dialysis patient who died because they couldn't get out of their house to get dialysis.

I'm not at ALL political and usually don't pay too much attention to politics and what's going on (shame on me,) but this is just blowing me away. This is so frustrating and discouraging and heartbreaking. Yes, I'm sending money, but our government spends billions on wars and yet they can't help our own faster?

Amen!

If we weren't so focused on the external (personally and politically), we could afford to build proper levees in the first place. And educate and take good enough care of our citizens so they don't start shooting people at the first sign of trouble.

What's the story with your avatar?

The anger is setting in for all of us. madness for some (snipers at the charity hospital? good god.) I really believe that every govt and civil service agency is doing their best, trying to, but theres just so much confusion. this is CHAOS of historic proportions. i shudder to think of the things that will go wrong due to the lack of communication. but yes, why, WHY can't we at least drop some basic supplies?

I am heartbroken, I really believed American could take care of Americans. Please, please these people are drying just for water and food. Why can't it be helicoptered in?
