We are planning a 1st time trip there this September and I would like to know a few things on your "must see" list. We will only be there for four days.

empire state building
staten island ferry - day is good for day views, dusk is good to see the city lit up one the return trip
central park on the weekend - enter at tavern on the green, slalom skaters are there on loop road(if it's still happenning), head into park along north side of sheep's meadow, dance skaters are down the walk.
museums - nat history, moma, gugenheim, whitney, met
ground zero
st. marks-8th street
plaza
barney's
christopher st
soho
south street seaport, or fish mkt in the early morning
see a show
green market at 14th street

then there's the food...

i'm sure kim will chime in, if she hasn't already. september is a nice long planning window away

barney's-Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman and if you can bear it Saks. Between you and me, you can skip Macy's. FAO Schwartz...Toys R Us in Tmes Square is cool too
christopher st Right by chez Kimmi. Hit the whole West Village
soho

You have to walk the West Village- over to 8th ave. Get a cupcake at Magnolia Bakery. It's worth the wait.

I love St. Patrick's Cathedral. I am not Catholic, but I totally get weepy when I am in that place. If you can't get moved even a little bit just standing in there, then you are a bit brittle! I was inside of St. Patrick's when the Pope died last spring- one of those moments I will never forget. Shivers.
