Dr. Sandra Hansen...in Fort Walton Beach. (Mar Walt Dr.)..it is called the Breast Clinic and that is all she does. She found a lump on me during a routine digital mammo and immediately put me in another room and did an ultrasound, then asperated it on the spot! She tested the fluid obtained which took a couple of days for the results, however before leaving the clinic that day she explained she was familiar with the type of fluid she pulled and did not think it was cancer. And it wasn't. Is that sevice or what!!!!! I go no where else for the yearly breast check.

Dr. Hansen also removed a lump and biopsied it for me when I was 20yrs old. I found it myself and the gyno referred me to her. She was really great and very thorough. Luckily it was just a fibroid. What really worries me is inflammatory breast cancer because it doesn't come with a lump.

Michigan but someday in SoWal as well
i think it's probably "standard practice" to wait 6 months for a follow-up after seeing certain kinds of images and most of the time it turns out well. But I found that if I ask my doctor for a follow-up test after she says "wait 6 months", she says OK and sets it up. So, I think those that kindly push back a little bit may get better care overall. As I mentioned earlier, one friend of mine who did that indeed found cancer and got away with a lumpectomy and radiation rather than chemo because she found it so early.

I am 30 and have never had my doctor mention a mammogram. Cancer runs in my family and I also have fibrous breasts. Should I request one at my age?:dunno:

I was the same - extremely fibrous, so the gyno who does your breast exam can't really know what's going on in there. I think its surely worth starting a baseline now. but please don't worry olive! you are very young and healthy. great that you are starting to think about detection now. I would say mid-30's at the latest. I really cannot imagine waiting til 40.

Yes! If for no other reason than a baseline to refer to in years to come.

I think that statistic is based on all women throughout their lifetimes. Like, by age 78, 1 in 4 women will have had breast cancer.
