My husband was fishing yesterday at the mouth of the bay and the intercoastal and saw a huge manatee!! One of the few times I did not go out with him :bang: . Anyway, I thought I remembered reading in the Sun that you were to report any sitings. I looking in the phone book and called the number for "reporting dangered species" and it was no longer in service! It may be too late to report this one but thought it would be nice to have the number if we are blessed in seeing another one. Anyone have a number for this?

The manatee is the Golden Retriever of the seas. They are so gentle and velvety to the touch. I hope that boaters will be on the watch for this one and give it a wide birth. We have several manatee stuffed animals among the sea creatures in our children's bunk room. I'm tempted to sleep with one of them myself sometimes!

So do I Miss Kitty. We have traveled to Crystal River to see them and never dreamed they would be in our back yard. That is why I wanted to report the siting. Will take the camera out next trip!

Hubby had the trolling motor on and said the manataee swam right up to the boat. He then turned the troller off and just watched in awe until it swam away. Boats speed through the intercoastal and definitely could harm the manatee which is why I wanted to report the siting. This is very rare for our area as you already know. Hey maybe I will call Channel 13..hmmmm. Must go now and report the news!!

Yeah there are. Not only barge traffic, but pleasure boats tend to crank it up and run wide open through there. I live within sight of that spot, and if I were to see a manatee, I'd probably faint so you KNOW no one else is expecting one to be there. Best to get the news out any way you can!

Nooooooooooooo...he/she was not injured but we were concerned about the location due do high traffic. I finally reached law enforcment..thank you Kurt for the number, although I was transferred three times! For any sightings immediately call 888-404-3922. The person I spoke to said it was not unusual for the manatee to be in our warm waters... :dunno: Although we have lived in the area for 11 years, are avid boaters and have never spotted a manatee before??? I explained that we tried to contact them yesterday but the number we found for reporting was DISCONNECTED. He seemed put out that I called a day later. Anyway we will go alooking for the whales..no no that's Sj aloking for the manatee!! Hee Hee

Contact the "Save the Manatee" organization at 800-432-5646. They will direct you to whom you should speak about this particular situation. They may already be aware of it. Good luck.

I saw one in the gulf a few years ago and have heard of reports in the bay near Destin but not near PW. I didn't know they wanted any reports of sea cows that weren't injured.
