Medical Question for Dr. Skunky

What are the dangers of taking more than the recommended dose of Aleve? It says you may take 2 tabs for the 1st dose then 1 tab every 8 - 12hrs, not to exceed 10 days. That sounds like it could be pretty potent. But, it's not helping my pain, so I have started taking 2 tabs every 12 hours for the last 3 days. And it's only helping marginally. (I'm not looking for a magic bullet, just a little temp. pain management.)

The earliest rheumatologist app't I could get is in mid July ; but did find an orthopaedic surgeon for later this week. My regular doc is unsure who I should be seeing. We're trying to rule out causes of some pretty intense pain (scale of 1 - 10, mine about a 9 - - swelling, can't bend the knee) that it could be a damaged meniscus, arthritis, etc. And it is definately worse at night.

Anyway, not looking for you to diagnose, just a little input on the Aleve aspect. It might help others as well. Thanks!

Just a few minutes ago I saw a 9 year old who developed cellulitis following numerous mosquito bites Saturday...I aint touching that with a 10 foot pole!

So do you have all of the nurses hooked on SoWal.com, too?

Interesting. I've had shoes that give me an intense headache. It was difficult to narrow the headache cause to the shoes because my feet weren't hurting as bad as my head.
Yes, this is one of the worst, continuous pain I've had to deal with in a long, long time. I mean, I don't think I've ever awakened from deep sleep, crying from intense knee pain, frozen in a locked position. I really feel for those who have arthritis.

expand on this, please. :idontno:

Cellulitis is an infection of the skin with some extension into the subcutaneous tissues. I thought that the insect bites introduced bacteria into her skin which caused the infection...maybe it was just a severe reaction to the bites, however, she did have cellulitis in the past, which is a risk factor to develop it in the future, so I put her on a course of antibiotics.

Many times a torn meniscus causes a knee to freeze-has anyone explored this?

Okay, so one of my students has cellulitis. He has huge oozing sores on his neck that sometimes protrudes two inches from his neck. He is constantly wiping the sores with his hands, and he leaves every class at least once per class period for at least 10 minutes to wipe down the ooze. I have a heart value problem, and my doctors have told me that I should not have any contact with him due to the risk of his infection giving me bacterial endocarditis. The administration at the college says that I can't discriminate against him and should just use good handwashing techniques. I have gone to websites for other schools, and they have strict rules that require students with oozing sores to cover them. My employers refuse to impose this on my student. So my doctor has put me on antibiotics whenever this student is in one of my classes, has told me to wash down anything he touches on my desk in the classroom or my office, and has told me to wear gloves whenever I grade tests in a class that he is in and then throw away the gloves. It is very inconvenient. I don't know why I have no rights to protect my health, yet he has the right to expose everyone to the diseases from his oozing sores. There are many times that I can't help other students debug their programs because I can't touch their keyboards and not touch his because that might be perceived as discriminatory. So I just have to tell them what to do and point to the screen without touching anything. I always open the door to the computer lab with the end of my sleeve so my skin doesn't touch anything he has touched. And if I accidentally come in contact with anything that he oozes on (like if unexpectedly he puts something on my desk), I leave the room and wash my hands with antibacterial liquid. I normally take the roll during every class by having each student post his/her signature as proof of attendance, but in any class he is in, I don't take the roll because it would just be one more route for me to touch something he has touched after wiping that oozing stuff coming from his neck.

I'm not gonna lie. It is really gross. It's really bad when I have to be on antibiotics for several months at a time to protect myself from someone that the administration doesn't want to offend, knowing that most schools have policies that require students with oozing sores to cover them.

BTW the administration also promised me that he would get the problem under control via medication and have surgery last summer to take care of it. (BTW that didn't happen -- he arrived in the fall with the oozing sores again). They said they really felt badly that they had to embarrass him by discussing this with him. EXCUSE ME? I feel badly that I (or some student who doesn't know WTF cellulitis is) have my health jeopardized by him. They didn't feel badly about me and other faculty/staff/students with health problems that could put us at risk?????

My PT I go to 2x/week for the plantar f. is the one who suggested the meniscus thing when I described the frozen knee. I mean, I've never felt pain like that before in my sleep (I dread going to bed each night). That's why the sudden urgency to find the right doc. I have the ortho app't. this week to hopefully find this out. I'm just limping along in the meanwhile.

Well, sorry I can't offer you any help here but this is bad. Just one more thing to worry about. I'm already a germaphobe and I've never even heard of this! What the heck do you do if you don't know if you've come in contact with someone with this???

Not gonna sleep well tonight.

Amazing. In a hospital he would probably be in isolation for MRSA infection. :bang:

I had never heard of it either, but you just can't imagine how disgusting it is. From what I've read, his sores are probably full of staph infection. I wash my hands so often that they look like the hands of an elderly woman, but I don't want to take any chances. Because of this experience, I try to avoid touching anything anywhere. I try to wear a jacket or long sleeves so I never have to touch door handles. I hit elevator buttons with my elbow. When I must use a public restroom, I wash my hands, turn off the water with my elbows, grab the paper towels and use them to open the door, and if the management is clueless enough not to put the trash can right by the door (I've found that about 80% of restrooms do have it right next to the door), I use the paper towel to open the door and then throw the towel on the floor -- I hate to litter, but I don't want to catch a disease unnecessarily. I don't want to get sick if I can avoid it.

Of course, as a foodie, this bothers me. How do I know what happens in the kitchen when I'm not watching? Who is sick and just sneezed or coughed on my entree? Who just cut him/herself while doing food prep and got hepatitis, HIV, etc., germs on the food I eat?

Life is a crapshoot. But I know that it is 100% probable that my student has an active infection to which I can be exposed. I don't know what that probability is, say, at Houston's on West Paces Ferry.

Hope you get some relief from your pain, gull. We haven't found a solution for Beach Jacket, although her new doctor at Hughston Clinic says with in about five years there will be a non-invasive way to cure her pain.

Here is a photo of the actual thing. This is the good side. The other side protrudes out of the entire side of the neck.

I have this photo because we have an annual end-of-year luncheon and always take photos. The only good thing was that I didn't eat too much for obvious reasons.

Not only is it on the front, but it covers the entire right side of his neck from his chin to his collar bone. It's been like that for months. It actually looks better than it did because it doesn't protrude as far.

No, this photo is nothing - it just looks like a big pimple in comparison. The cellulitis on the person I know covers his neck from his chin to his collarbone, like a big, multi-layered tumor. Probably 4" x 4" and at least 1" deep. The cellulitis diagnosis has been verified by the VP of our institution.

Ughh. What kind of parents wouldn't address the issue?! Jeez, can you imagine him going on a job interview one day with a necktie providing just enough pressure to get the juices flowing?

Poor guy. Imagine how he must feel. Like a :trainwreck: most likely, especially when alienated. Certainly some of your students must have acne. Looks like they might be ingrown hair follicles. You know he must pick up on how strongly you feel about his germs. He probably already feels like a freak. When you're blessed with smooth skin, you really don't know how blessed you are. Like you said you probably get just as many germs at Houston's if not more. Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they are not there. :yikes: This is a young person. Do you think he likes his bumps? Do you think he wouldn't do anything to get rid of those bumps? Do you know how this could affect his self-esteem? You even have a picture of his neck bumps:confused:   Give the poor kid a break! Have you ever had a student with HIV?

 Maybe his parents are broke or dead? Maybe he saw a doctor who was obviously disgusted by him and decided to never go back for further treatment in fear of being embarassed, possibly even in front of female nurses. You never know what other folks are going through. :idontno:

Johnrudy....I remember you having this knee problem a long time ago. Did you see a Dr. then? This sounds really awful and I hope you see a specialist right away. Be careful of Aleve, Advil, etc. I took large quantities and messed up my stomach big time. I now have to take Darvocet N for any aches and pains. Doesn't work the same.

Yes, I did at that time... had an xray to rule out a possible blood clot. So this was obviously the beginning of something more serious. I woke up at 2am, took a handful of Ibuprofen with a tall glass of water. I had no other choice. This pain is like no other I've ever experienced. And I'm no baby when it comes to pain. I gave birth to a 9.5 lb. baby - - natural, no drugs, 18 hrs. of labor.
I got my ortho. app't moved up to this afternoon. I'm thinking this HAS to be something torn. I'm also asking for some kind of pain meds. too!

Anyone else feeling kind of sick from all these pictures and descriptions?

I wouldn't last a day in medicine, the only hemorrhaging I can see is from bank accounts. But that makes me a little ill too. Must lie down...
