What are the olds that the wine is okay if there is mold on the cork? :dunno:

Just went to open some vino for dinner, took the wrapper off, and it looks like a science project!

Can you return unopened wine?

I already used this smiley on the frog thread, but it seems to fit here, too:

I don't know nothing about moldy wine corks...

mold grows in dark damp places. If the mold is due to wine seeping out of the cork, it likely means that the wine was not stored properly on its side, and the cork dried out. When the wine was returned to rest on its side, the wine seeped out into the foil, causing the mold. It doesn't necessarily mean that the wine has spoiled. Depends on how long the air was able to penetrate the bottle and prematurely age (spoil) the wine. If it is a recent purchase, you could probably return it for an exchange if it is unopened, with only the foil removed.

Take it back, ask for a replacement.

Thanks!

I knew it wasn't right and was probably bad, just didn't know the exact reason/solution!

I would ditch that one...hope it wasn't too expensive...and I hope it isn't your only bottle of wine

Ha-ha! Definitely not the only bottle and I'm too scotch/german to spend more than $10 a pop for general drinkin' wine!

Wineries still using real cork report 5-10% of their bottles can get mold. It sounds like if it is actually inside the bottle, the wine will be spoiled. When it is outside of the bottle, the wine is usually OK.
I read that the storage of the bottles is the big factor. A bottle tipped on its side allows wine to remain in contact with the cork material, thus keeping it moist and swelled properly to keep air out. Bottles stored standing up allows the cork to dry out and shrink, possibly letting air in that starts the mold process. Artificial corks eliminate this issue.

More people than you would expect have no idea why you sniff the cork of a bottle of wine. It is to see if the wine is "corked". By that mean gone bad either by mold or fungus. Normally, you can smell it as soon as the bottle is opened, but you can really smell it in the cork. That's why you sniff it...

A lot of wineries are going to synthetic corks and even screw tops to eliminate the problem you had. Should be funny to watch the elitest winos adjust to that one!

It's not that hard. The funny thing is watching someone who's had a little too much wine try to cut the foil and get the wine key in a screw top. :rotfl:
