I for one am very glad to learn a bit more about the origin and procedures of Mosquito Control - I had noticed that the truck hasn't been around this summer, as opposed to almost daily sprayings last summer. I just assumed it was a lack of oversight or someone slacking or lack of funding. I am glad to know that there is a clearly defined system with testing and additional/alternate control methods in place. I can't comment on the efficacy, as I wasn't here pre-mosquito control and don't know the difference, but I appreciate the information in both threads, Bob!

We also have a relatively new container Mosquito, the Asian Tiger. Very aggressive, breeds in containers, it sips, which is it will bite, leave and come back again. They also carry Dengue Fever. BTW, thanks to Stephen Sickerman for the info!

Ditto on no mosquito trucks in our area (Eucheanna) this year. And yes, the mosquito population is bad. We have had an abundance of rain in the last few weeks.

It's been reported that West Nile has emerged in Northwest Florida very recently, 5 humans have been infected. Please call Mosquito Control to have your property evaluated by WCMC if you are experiencing new populations of mosquitos, which most of us are since the rains of the last 2 weeks. WCMC will check for breeding grounds (standing water). Before calling, please check your property for anything that will hold water, even Magnolia leaves.

Mr. Hudson:
Thank you for pointing out that Eucheanna is north of the Mason-Dixon line/DMZ/Line of Demarcation for mosquito control/combat for the county. Perhaps, you could put a bug in the ear (no pun intended) of the powers that be regarding mosquito control to educate the population regarding who to call when experiencing mosquito issues in the north end of the county. It would also be helpful to know what constitutes the north versus south boundaries.

I quit hiding cattle from the union army a looooooong time ago.

My reference to "North Walton Mosquito Control" had nothing to do with a DMZ line. It is based on the simple fact that the departments name is NWMC. This is a quote from the Walton County Website:

Public Works encompasses Fleet Management, Storm Water Management, Engineering, Environmental, Utilities Coordination, Solid Waste, Right of Way, Bridges, North Walton Mosquito Control, and Road Building Departments. Public Works is the largest division in the county’s organization.

The SWCMCD service area was defined in the referendum in 1964. A simple way to make the determination of which service area one lives in is this: If you live south of the Choctawhatchee Bay/Inter-coastal waterway or in Bunker or Black Creek and east to the Bay County line and west to the Okaloosa County line your service is by SWCMCD.

The SWCMCD office is located on HWY 393 North and the phone number is 850-267-2112. Have a question about service in that area you can also email me at seat3@swcmcd.org or simply post on Sowal. I try to handle questions and service requests here as well.

If you live outside of that area your mosquito control is provided by North Walton Mosquito Control in DeFuniak Springs. Their contact information is:

North Walton Mosquito Control
117 Montgomery Circle
DeFuniak Springs, FL 32433

Ph: (850) 892-8108
Fax: (850) 892-8094

Hope this helps !
