This is a long shot, but maybe this might be your situation. At my workplace the IT department backs up everyone's "My Documents" on their server to avoid people freaking out when they do something stupid and lose all of their data. The default location for the iTunes folder is in "My Documents." I could access iTunes at work, but whenever I was at home, I'd get a "locked disk" error message whenever I tried to launch iTunes. The only way that IT could solve the problem was to exclude my "My Documents" folder from being backed up on the server. Actually, that's okay with me. I'd rather not have my employer have a copy of my personal stuff on their server. In one instance that I know of, they searched an employee's backup to find the data to fire him.

Side note, I saw John Hiatt last week with the North Mississippi Allstars as his band, and it was a terrible show. It just didn't work. He should have performed solo.

Joe, what didn't you like about the show? I enjoyed the North Mississippi Allstars, esp the lead guitar player. FWIW, our concert was at a small outdoor amphitheater and the acoustics were quite good.

Musicmatch co-exists reasonably well with most stuff (factory installed on a Dell?). Suggestion - iTunes is an apple-centric ported to wintel platfrorm as an afterthought. Maybe go with Smilin' Joe's fav. I know Realplayer is robust, co-exists well with most stuff, and one of the two primary vid/audio players on most net sites (Windows Media Player is the other). If all you're looking for is a quick no groaning install and snatching some music, maybe go that way. D/L pricing and tune preview is same as iTunes. Let me know if you want a link to the RP site...

I guess I went to the show thinking that it would highlight both acts, and it highlighted only John Hiatt. I like the NMA and JH, individually. Also, I think the sound was aweful. Perhaps too much asphalt. They played in a big parking lot in front of a big hotel, and had a crappy sound tech to boot!

Mike Gordon, of Phish, and the well-known singer songwriter, Leo Koetke, have an album out, entitled Clone (?). It is a great combination featuring both artists' songs. It is one of my favorites at the moment. I guess I was hoping that the NMA and JH would be as great working together, but I missed the funkyness of the NMA. It was like any band could have been playing for John. Not all was lost at the venue because I saw so many great performances, including a small town, unknown artist who has a couple of CDs, which you can sample online at www.PatrickFitzsimons.com
I highly recommend purchasing a CD. He has something unlike most artists today, and seems like a really cool guy too. RiverOtter, for some reason I think you will really enjoy his music.

Any consolation, it's not you. Notion of craftsmanship in the s/w industry is the same as everywhere else. Been building s/w for 25+ years on lots of different platforms, jacked with hardware (chips & such) a lot prior to that and along the way, pretty intimate with how everything works under the covers, and I still bang my head regularly.

Hmmm - I put my sentence together poorly. I meant get RealPlayer & use that. Maybe you can D/L music with WMP but I haven't looked into that. What kind of portable player you have?

Click on the home page, and go to "music." You can search by song title, album, artist, popular downloads, genre, etc. I find it extremely user friendly. Of course, my Artist Recommendation is not on there.
