If Fyl has erupting teeth that are trying to come in she may trap food between the tissue and the tooth as it tries to erupt, this is painful and can lead to infection.
An infection in the gums can be really bad if she's like 20% of all females and has mitral valve prolapse (mine wasn't diagnosed until my late 30's). If you have MVP or any heart valve problem, an infection in the gums can lead to an infection in the valve that becomes bacterial endocarditis (probably not very likely -- you'd have to ask Skunky that -- but still a consideration).

I have a big mouth (as if y'all didn't know :funn: ), so I have all 4 wisdom teeth and room for more. My dentist always chuckles about it.

There is such a collective font of wisdom (no pun intended) on this board I am continually amazed, and in this case, appreciative.

I read through all your responses and called the dentist straight away to get the scoop on what's going on in Philippa's mouth. Four need to be cut  out, especially the bottom ones, which will push her teeth if they're not gotten rid of. Seeing that Fyl has an absolutely glorious mouth, we can't run the risk of ruining a good thing so out they will come. I scheduled for Christmas break just before Xmas. What a good present Santa is bringing her this year! (Poor thing)

When I had mine pulled my face was all chipmunk-y for about two days and then it was fine.
Tell Fyl at least she won't get as puffy as I did after my jaw surgery. When I got home from the hospital my brother looked at me, laughed, and told me to "make him an offer he can't refuse" a la The Godfather.

You should have put a horse head in his bed.

Mermaid:
I'm a little late to this discussion, but my college-age kids have faced the same issues as yours. Three years ago, Stefan had all four taken out at once, came home and was miserable for a day (this was done just after HS graduation). It took him about 2-3 days to recouperate--pain pills were helpful, along with the ice. No complications, thank god. Zosia is due to have hers removed in about 8 days--(she's going to be a college sophomore this fall.) Evidently, hers have erupted already, and the dentist has told her it will not be "hard to do". We'll see--but I'm ready to have her get this done--she tells me her mouth hurts, and the teeth seem to be crowding her other permanent teeth. I worry for her--I had two of mine out years ago, and my face swelled up for a week.
I think your plan is a good one--the summer before college starts is tense enough--(Stefan's going to Senegal next month for a semester abroad--he's scared to death. I'm glad he's not facing wisdom teeth issues!)

mermy - glad you've decided what to do. I just read through the thread and was going to say what's the rush? other than yes, they do need to come out at some point. I was told by my dentist that they needed to come out mainly because they would be hard to care for way back there and were basically not needed. and my mouth was already so crowded with teeth that there really wasn't room, so I had it done in HS. one was not found and had to be extracted many years later.

still, I don't see any rush in the matter unless there is something very unusual.

Much thanks again! All's well that ends well. No complaints from Philippa about seeing the dentist before Christmas. Just as well I didn't override her and schedule for this week because she just had her last round of shots/vaccinations for college, AND her first gyn exam. My poor baby's getting it all around...I think getting her teeth yanked really would have been the last straw! :yikes:
