As some of you are aware, I work in a nursing facility. Our Activity Director is about as imaginative as a rock, so the Director of Nurses and I have started planning some of the activities. We have decided to have a Mardi Gras party on the actual evening. So far, we're planning Gumbo, Red Beans&Rice, King Cake, etc. But I need some more suggestions. Most of our residents are wheelchair bound, but some are ambulatory. We will, of course elect a King and Queen. So....gimme your best...

You must have beads and maybe masks for the residents that would like one. What a grayt person:clap_1: you are to work in that type of facility and bring funn to those lives.

oh, i forgot to say we ordered beads and masks(plain) from Oriental Trading, and the social worker who's a big scrapbooker, is gonna help them all decorate their masks. Any good music suggestions (Skunky?). Things to do AT the party?

Best of New Orleans Jazz - Dejan's Olympia Brass Band
Houseparty New Orleans Style - Professor Longhair
Mardi Gras in New Orleans Volume II - Featuring The Meters

Have them do a second-line. Tell them to dress in purple/green/gold.

Make sure no one swallows the plastic Baby Jesus in the King Cake.

Dixie Beer?

When my daughter was in first grade, I threw a Mardi Gras party for her class. (Most people are clueless about Mardi Gras around here. I helped her explain the meaning of the colors, 12th Night, Ephiphany, parades, etc., to her class.) From Oriental Trading I ordered a quantity of 12 masks and beads for her class. Well, that was 12 gross. She went to a small private school (graduating class of 12), so I had enough beads and masks to do a Mardi Gras party for them from 1st through 12th grade!:rotfl:

Too funny, BR! I like the Dixie Beer, they will too! Yeah, I'd already thought about the baby Jesus swallowing factor.

Music: Zachary Richard, Buckwheat Zydeco, plus there's lots and lots others. Maybe even a little Dr. John.

Good, good....keep 'em comin'.

wish you could bring the girls--the residents would LOVE it!
I like the parade idea--I think some of the nurses are gonna buy ball gowns at the second hand store for the ladies.
