Did anybody see Michael Pollan on Oprah last week? I caught a little of it. They were talking a lot about Food Inc., and about his new book, title of which I've already forgotten. I will of course be reading it soon--I have yet to be bored by anything that man has written.
I'll have to read it too. Right now finishing Eating Animals which is a must read.
For whatever it's worth, this once-militant vegetarian is having now to take another hard look at what I eat. Recent health challenges have me on an allergy elimination diet for several weeks (no foods or food-like substances containing milk, dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten, corn, soy, sugar, honey, oranges, strawberries, peanuts, preservatives, additives, artificial sweeteners), and on top of that, I have to have at least 25 gm. organic, preservative-free animal protein a day, in 6 small meals per day. For me, that's a lot of non-egg, non-dairy animal protein to be taking in after many years of being just this side of vegetarian.
So what is a typical day like food wise? Brown rice and meat and veggies?
Very grateful for Renee's happily raised chickens from Twin Oaks Farm, for the fish in the freezer that my guys caught late in the summer, and for all the great gluten-free and other allergen-free foods at For The Health of It; wishing my guys had gotten into hunting so we might have some venison in the freezer too. I am not even thinking about dining out. I would be the one that they hate to see coming in the door!
You are so lucky to be able to GET real food that hasn't been contaminated with hormones, etc.... what is better for the animals is better for us.
So my don't-eat list has most of the food basics from which our packaged food-like substances are derived, which means everything I eat is from scratch.
When I was raw that was the way it was for me. Nothing from a package. I looked younger, had no puffiness in my face and was pretty much doing great - until my shoulder froze and I made some changes too. But some changes are NOT working for me. It is a constant tweak and the stress of house building has me eating things I haven't eatin in YEARS!
Part of me wonders, would I be having these allergies and other health problems if our environment and food supply were different, better, cleaner, fresher, less pesticide-hormone-and chemical-laden? Are people with food and inhalant allergies, chemical sensitivities, auto-immune and endocrine disorders like the canaries in the coal mine?
I think there is a HUGE connection and also plastics, etc...I am glad you are working on it and do keep us posted as to your results. It will take some time....
I LOVE the smart-pig show.
Wasn't it the BEST???
