How do you think Obama will respond to his top advisor's request to send in more troops to Afghanistan, after receiving an award which is given to someone who has drawn down standing troops, according to Alfred Nobel? Do you think that by being given this award for past actions, that Obama will now have to live up to the award, and now draw down troops rather than increasing troops as his top generals are suggesting?

Maybe Obama plans to draw down troops anyway irrespective of his winning the prize. Maybe it's the right thing to do and maybe his generals are wrong about this just to play devil's advocate.

Personally, I hope he doesn't follow McChyrstal's recommendation (see my column on the subject below). Will the President actually withdraw all troops and leave the middle east in an instant? Hardly- It's not politically feasible and there are too many lurking variables.

I don't know if I agree with the thought that he was awarded for past actions (presumably the campaign). In the past nine months Obama has renewed positive and progressive dialogue on the international stage- a giant leap compared to the last eight years.

That said, will the award pressure Obama into drawing down troops? I think that's focusing too much on the means, rather the ends of peace. Pacifists have been given the award, but ultimately lack of attention can lead to just as much disruptions to the cause of peace as interventionism. Obama can prove himself worthy by adopting a strategy that helps secure peace.

What that strategy is, only time well tell.
