He's already raised taxes on all income groups when he raised various sin taxes a month or so ago. His budget includes various taxes and system that will increase taxes on all income groups and businesses, including small business, as well. The promise of only raising taxes on top earners has already been broken, and will likely be broken again and again over the next few years.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about income taxes.
if we apply your criteria for raising taxes to include any/all taxes then there never would have been nor will there ever be a POTUS who doesn't raise taxes...

Silly Geo - common sense like that has no place in political discussion! Out of context sound bites and whining about TAXES TAXES TAXES is the key!

Saw this from my favorite levelheaded columnist this week -- thanks for opening the door for me to post it scooty.

Now, I have never heard anyone say, "I like paying taxes, and wish that they were higher."

But to a certain extent, I do like paying my taxes, whether federal, state or local, and here's why: I do not mind paying for the right stuff.

A good tank or fighter jet? You bet. A smart FBI agent? Definitely. National parks, the Centers for Disease Control, the Highway Patrol, my city police, a fire truck, a filled pothole? Absolutely.

Look, I'm not a moron or a socialist. I know that the so-and-sos in government waste my money. I know that without intelligent opposition, the government just keeps inventing new ways to spend.

But for the right reason, paying a tax is more than a necessary evil. It is a downright privilege. It is a happy price tag for civilized society.

Which is more patriotic, a "Support Our Troops" bumper sticker ? or buying the bullets? Which is more "conservative," paying our bills as we go, or racking up a crippling debt that could destroy us?

This is based on the flawed assumption that if you simply let government tax enough, all will be well and everything will be paid for. I personally wouldn't suggest making the mistake of letting government tax whatever it needs to to balance the books, it'll just spend more and the books will remain unbalanced. I think you have to keep government in check, question everything they do, and hold elected officials responsible for their campaign promises. Call me crazy! :D

Laying a foundation is exactly what we need to do.

I have had to shift my fiscal responsibilities, spending less and am pulling out of this hole one day at a time.....one penny at a time. A friend who owes me money, has revenue over $1.5MM/year - I am financially carrying him right now???????

WTH is wrong with this picture?

Yours is the kind of "intelligent opposition" he was referring to, two grafs above.

Howard has done his sharing of ranting about specific taxes over the years, but he is levelheaded always and I believe has the right attitude for the times. The key is loyal and intelligent opposition, and demands that the dollars be spent as well as possible.

I like what Obama has done so far for the most part, and he is hitting the right notes in the way he explains things. He has demonstrated that he is listening to the naysayers -- in fact, he actually mentions all their concerns, word for word! -- but he also has the courage of his convictions. If and when certain aspects of his plan begin to go awry, I don't have much doubt that he will adjust ala FDR.

Remember -- these are future unmanageable debts we are concerned about (in addition to the already difficult-to-manage debts that were in place). We need to climb out of the hole and as he said today, the way to do it is not to let huge institutions fail or simply stop spending government money. I can buy into that for now since there are plenty of good economists who seem to agree.

There are plenty who disagree but you won't hear about them. :D

It's interesting to watch Bernanke follow the Monetarist approach as he injects massive liquidity into the economy (btw, Japan, the UK, China and others are doing the same) while Obama has followed the Keynes approach of huge deficit spending. Who knows what the outcome will eventually be? Well, other than inflation but we can't worry about that now. We are faced with deflation and it is an ugly POS.

Regardless of my fiscal differences with Obama, I am truly grateful that we have a leader in the White House. Like FDR, he speaks to people's hearts and hope. You gotta feel good about that. :D

I just can't agree, the size of the hole Obama is digging is massive. It's hard to climb out of a hole when you're busy digging it deeper. His spending plan is HUGE, we're talking trillion in new debt in just a year or two. He's already added 500 billion since he took office. That is unimaginable. There just has to be a better way. How are we going to pay all this off without destroying the economy while also keeping social services solvent?
