What I think most people don't catch are comments like this made by Obama.

"I never heard anything that I would object to during my 20 years as a member of the church."

So is that saying he doesn't object to the racial comments made by the Rev. ?

And in what other churches black or white oriented do the pastors grab them self and make a humping motion in front of the whole church.

I don't know about anyone else but I find it hard to believe in 20 years Obama hasn't see or heard any of this.

Maybe he was asleep in the pew?

...I would just add: not too many white people have ever spent much time in a Black church...otherwise, they would understand more about the culture and context of this minister...

Nor do most people go to KKK meetings. If they did, perhaps they would understand the culture. The argument goes both ways. I for one would not allow myself to be in a place where intolerance is accepted and taught.

Hate is hate, no excuses. Raising children in an environment of hate is only detrimental to their social development. So many people have reason to hate, but they rise above it and take responsibility for their own actions and succeed in life, in spite of what wrongs have come their way. Throughout American history, our country has been a haven for people seeking opportunity and freedom. As one example, Italian and Irish immigrants didn't get what they expected when they landed at Ellis Island, but they embraced the opportunity to better their circumstances. We don't hear their descendants as a group, saying they hate this country for what it did to their great grandparents--for the fact that their great grandparents sold rags and lived in disgusting tenements and had their little babies die in their arms because of the disease and squalor in those buildings. Italian Americans and Irish Americans are very proud of their heritage.

Our success in life depends upon ourselves and the choices we make and the work we put into realizing our dreams. Our lack of success also depends upon ourselves.

excellent points punzy.

I feel the reverend's words are strong, but are people trying to understand what may have been behind them? what his point was? obama's loyalty to his friend? no. they just want to use the reverend and his words against Senator Obama. Its really all they have so far. the Obama is a Muslim is only working in the most remote parts of the country.

and the issue has brought on a big discussion about race. its an issue that needs to be discussed now more than ever. why are so many people uncomfortable with it? I think its a major part of our society that needs open dialog now. why is the Reverend issue now about race? because the reverend's words came from a place where racism has caused much sorrow, bitterness, pain. because white people too often refuse to look at race in america. its just not very "pleasant" to think about or discuss, is it?

does anyone care about the achievements of Rev Wright, or what he stood for, or how he helped others in his work? hmmm.. probably not.

Obama himself made the issue about race when he gave his speech yesterday. I think most Americans thought that we were over the race issue. Just look at how many people of all races, genders, socioeconomic status have supported Barack Obama. He has filled arenas with 20 thousand people--who believe in him. Race has not been the issue until Obama decided to give his speech yesterday. He has made himself the "Black" candidate, which is ironic since he is just as much a white candidate as a black candidate.

Whenever someone refers to Obama's utter lack of policy, I know they have never picked up The Audacity of Hope or taken a moment to look at his website. I encourage anyone who doubts he has well formed policies to visit the website.

As for how he'd pay for them -- well, I just hope he would be expected to pay for his policies, because the economy was much healthier when Democrats were in control and we practiced pay as you go rather than the borrow from the Chinese and spend policies of the Republicans.

I have not read his book, but I have visited his website on numerous occasions. My concern is that his own supporters admit that he has "no idea" how he is going to solve the huge problems that our next president will face.

I wonder how many Obama supporters have read his book or visited his website.

While currently not a supporter, I have been to his website and listened to his last book, Audacity something and it was pretty interesting. I am listening to another one that someone wrote about him, but hard to follow, the guy that is reading it has a weird cadence in his voice that I find most annoying. Going to have to read that one if I want to finish it I guess.

while I do understand where cck is coming from her her points above, I respectfully disagree with the comparison of the black experience with Italians and other immigrants. this view seems very narrow. it is never that simple.

my Italian family came from sicily, and ended up in Bham where they did experience difficulty and eventual success in their acceptance into society. but their obstacles were very very different from the african american in every way. because Italians were white, and did not come from such circumstances as slavery and widespread/accepted bigotry, came to america by choice, and with skills, they were fairly readily accepted and able to fully participate in society, even if they did experience obstacles. there can be no comparison imo.

the black experience in America is still a unique one. I doubt there are many on this board who can really speak to it. however, like many issues we'll have many different thoughts and opinions, based on our experiences and beliefs.

I have. and there are many obama supporters who are quite informed and you will not hear them say that he has no idea. I have never met a supporter who said anything like this. I would have remembered.

My perfect beach
If Jesus were running for president he could turn water into gas and I'm pretty certain he would get elected.

Pretty sure he could do even better than that, and get rid of our need for gas entirely! Wouldn't that be great?:D
