I think it's certainly better than rushing a bill that we all need to be cognizant of......unlike the TARP that got voted on in 18 mins. So, this is tabled until next session.

Now what?

Not exactly...anything can happen in the last hours of a Session...watch out for someone to tack it on to the Appropriations Bill.....or anything else that is a "must pass"

You're right. Maybe it got the halt because it flew through the House! Will be interesting to see this one unfold!

Actually, I think Gov Crist has never been in favor of this. And, if they were truthful, I think many in the Legislature are not; they panicked last summer when gasoline was so expensive and some started calling and saying, "drill, baby, drill"-now, things are different (at least for the moment...and rationality has returned)

...drilling is, like so 1990's. Why are the Conservatives so affraid of the future? Why do they always defer to the older, outmoded methods over the newer, the innovative, and the sustainable/renewable for the future? Conservatives want oil rigs to cloud the beautiful 30A horizon--it is just a shame! They are all so selfish!

I agree with you. I don't think the majority of voters are for drilling while we are making advancements for alternative sources. I will continue to watch this as it's not just alternative sources, but energy independence we need to reach at this juncture. This one is tricky - it affects all of us - but, we have to strike a balance.

Heard late news tonight from the Legislature--sure enough, Associated Industries (the most powerful business lobby) and their "unknown" companies, tried to tack the bill onto a bill that the governor wanted; he refused. Then, the House voted down Senate bill on Florida Forever, in retaliation for the drilling bill...oh, what goes on in the halls of the Florida legislature. I am so glad I am no longer a part of that process! And, I am very glad that the governor and others stood up for our coast and environment.

I thought I just heard the other day that Rep. Jim King from Jacksonville (R) was trying to do the bidding of the Governor on the off shore drilling issue. As I understood it he supported it. The Governor as I remember it said he did not want this rushed. I got the impression he was supporting it. Now this was on channel 7 and I could have misunderstood, but I don't think so. Full disclosure, I am not a supporter of Crist.

As for the people saying conservatives want oil rigs to cloud the beautiful horizon off of 30-A, that's just an opinion and it truly stinks. I work in the offshore oilfield ranging anywhere from ports in Mobile Bay to Texas and if the people working the job are safety oriented and environmentally conscious then nothing bad will happen. Drilling doesn't cause bad things, bad people do. In reality if the oil rigs are far enough offshore say around 10-15 miles or more offshore then you would hardly ever see them. Conservatives are not all selfish either. I think if drilling is a way to make us more self sufficient I am all for it as long as the environment is not harmed and the coastline is not clogged up either. I think a limit should be imposed as to how close to shore the rigs can come as well

I have also, in my youth, worked offshore and saw some outstanding fishing spot while working a supply boat. Does anyone know when the last time a well in the Gulf of Mexico has created an enviromental hazard.
