$75? Sounds like they were just charging you the difference of your bill vs what it states they'll cover in the small print. Quite often, rental car coverage will only cover up to a certain dollar amount a day or total up to a point.
Rental coverage around here is not cheap, as there is not much competition or need. I can rent a car for nearly half when I go to San Antonio or Portland, than I have when I needed to rent a car locally.

Check the coverage vs you rental bill first before you bother Ed. I've been with Progressive for years, have found it to have the best customer service on Earth in every department. Ask for a supervisor to review your situation. I've never paid for anything I wasn't responsible for, and never will.

If nothing else call your credit card company and dispute the charge. Let THEM go after the insurance companies.

OK, back to the Eagles game. Or at least I hope it stays their game.

This is the first I've heard of your accident. Glad to hear it wasn't much worse. Though it sounds like it was pretty bad.

I wouldn't go as far as calling Progressive slimy. Its probably just an automated system, like ours. We had someone listed in default and all they owed was 2 cents. Simply because a optical scanner mistook a 9 for a 7 on a hand written item, causing the bill not to be "paid in full". It stayed that way for 90 days, therefore throwing the account in default. Wasn't pretty, but we fixed their credit report and all was well.

Same thing could have happened with your case. The rental agency direct bills the insurance company. The account goes into an electronic "In box". It has so much time to be worked. The system cuts a check to the rental agency up to the amount the insurance covers. A bill is then sent systematically to the rental agency. They charge the outstanding balance to your card. They are not doing anything wrong, just what they are supposed to or agreed to.

Question is, did they tell you up front how much a day or total they would cover? Either way stand your ground. You didn't cause the accident. You don't need to pay for a thing.

Call the credit card company, dispute the bill.
Call Progressive, let them know the amount has been disputed and that they need to get the money from the parties actually responsible for the bill, which is not you.

Do go ahead and pay the amount due, as 75 bucks is not worth taking a hit on your credit report for, especially right now with the current credit crisis. Its better to pay it now and get reimbursed later than to have that mark on your credit report.

This is what the "drunk's" day job. I deal with credit reports, disputes and claims 40+ hours a week.

You wanna talk SLIMY? Let's talk about Chrysler. I just spent nearly $6000 on engine repair, and now a new engine on a PT Cruiser just out of warranty. When approached, Chrysler said I should have gotten the extended warranty. Now I've found the engine problem is a "KNOWN ISSUE", but since it is not a safety issue, and not enough cases have been reported, they are not going to put out a recall on it. Now I have to take on Chrysler. Now they are denying they ever said they were aware of the problem. THAT is SLIMY.

And we the Tax Payers are bailing them out. Perhaps if they didn't put out crap, they wouldn't be in such trouble.

And yes I'm bitter because the Eagles just lost this game. aaarrrgggghhh.:pissed:

You should've been there for the great negative balance default. It was a glitch in the system that caused any negative balance to go into default even though they owed the borrower money.

On the insurance issue, I agree sounds like the difference issue. I think my insurance covers about $15/day for a rental. That ain't much. The other option is to take them to small claims court. Odds are they wouldn't show up and you'd win. That or they would show up by sending some rediculously priced lawyer.
