We wear hats daily in this kind of weather. All kinds of stylish ones with matching scarves. But my tried & true one is my black wool & velvet hat.

Thank God I don't live in a part of the country where hats, scarves, and gloves are more than a fashion statement, as is true here in The South. That being said, if daughter and fiance decide to go to MIT for grad school as they are leaning towards, I'll just do what I did when she was there as an undergrad -- Land's End down coat with hood, scarf to cover my face, really warm gloves, and Gorsuch animal-print snow boots. No bad hair from the hood. And you don't wash your hair every day in that weather. Actually it looks the best three days after washing.

I agree that hat should be part of the outfit. So get a COOL hat!!

One thing I learned from my hairdresser is to NOT wash hair each time you would normally wash it - just use a conditioner. It will still clean it but not leave you with that fly away mess that one has to deal with in cold dry air. So I do that - I don't wash my hair daily anyway so the next time I am due to wash it I just use my fav Aveda conditioner in shower - and some on the legs too. WORKS!

Would love to see some of your hats!!

I'm an aveda junkie too and i've been tempted on occassion to use it as a bubble bath:love:

What do you do with your hair when cold weather necessitates wearing a hat? I've been wearing a hat everytime i go outside in this cold and my hair is flat as a board, sticking up and going in directions that it's naturally not capable of. I'm just curious. I'm not really the "hair-doing" type and if you know me, you know i'm not very concerned with style. :D Just thinking i might be doing my hair in the bathroom at work if i had to wear a hat every day.

If you're not a HAIR person, wack it off short and spiky, but this won't work if you have a long stork like neck.
If you like long hair, braid it down the back- this is always in style.
If you have a thick bush- like hair like an amazon- strip it by bleaching it or going blonde.
If you like attention and need your hair thickened, go red. This has a tendency to fade quick so may require more maintenance.
The most natural, and this also thickens but doesn't require as much maintenance, is being a brunette.
Am I ever going to shut up...blahblahblahblahblah

Last note cause I am boring myself- you don't have to pay megamoney to color your hair.
Find a neutral box color to begin with and don't go too dark or light at the beginning.
I like L'oreal.
Neutral=natural.
Ash is cool and will pull red and orange from your hair.
Warm is well warm and will add gold or red highlights.
This is the footnote version of hair coloring.
With that in mind, go with your gut and have fun!
