I'm confused because one day I tried out my animated "NOLA or Bust" and it didn't move. Maybe I accidentally uploaded one of the frames.

It might be uploading vs. embedding. I think the system has animated gifs disabled if you upload them, but throw them in photobucket and them embed them you should be good.
