Cheap red wines fit the bill for making sangria in the summer, since you're adding so many other ingredients like fruit and the wine's only a base, or in the winter when you're cooking up a big pot of boeuf bougiuignon.
Good point. Same logic I use when I order a margarita and don't ask for top-shelf tequila.

I wonder how little of the red would cause a terrible headache the next AM? Experiment for us, Mermy!

Based on those reviews, I doubt I would. C- and C+ and that high of a score seems to be solely based on the fact that it is cheap.

I don't have anything against cheap wine (hello Chan's Outlet), but this sounds like bad wine.

Even w/ $2 Chuck I was told to buy a bottle to taste in the parking lot and if that one is okay, then buy more.

I got some GREAT "cheap wine" from Chan's for my anniversary this past week.....it was a 92-point un-oaked Chardonnay called "Devil's Lair". I asked the nice lady at Chan's to help me find a good, un-oaked, low-acid, semi-fruity white, and she turned me on to one of the best wines I've had in ages (and I may not be a wine snob, but I've had some great wines in my years.....expensive, and not). This was a $17+ bottle. I went back day-before-yesterday and bought two more of the last four they had! I win!!! If you can get it, do.

For the record, I'm no expert, but I do know a good wine when I taste one.....Cambria is a GREAT "dependable" oaked wine (so that set's the "standard" for Chardonnay for me, with Devil's Lair as the un-oaked standard) and, for reds, the same goes for Marquis Phillips Shiraz, or Boarding Pass.....no "Easter-egg" taste, just fruity, not too sweet, and low-acid. The rest, IMHO, is either lesser-quality, or simply higher in price....and we all know that price doesn't eschew quality.

Happy sippin'!

As long as it's not chardonnay, I'm sure we'll find a use for it! ;-)

I go to Chan's Outlet to stock up - I have my faves and it adds up fast when you are saving $2-5 on every bottle compared to the grocery.

My mother bought some and we tried it, I think it was the Pinot Grigio, and it was not bad. It's not Kendal Jackson, but mother is disappointed she can't find any more locally. My mother is the type that always has a stock of very good wine in the house and the Oak Leaf wine is good and the price makes it better!

Where do you find it?

I expect I'd have far less a headache the next AM with cheap reds than I would from Big D's killer-exquisite Margaritas.

My favorite cheap wine is Barefoot Pinot Grigio. About $6/bottle at most grocery stores or $10 for the big bottle. My husband drinks Barefoot red on occassion and says it's not bad, but I think the Pinot Grigio is really good. Give it a try.

Don't like the Barefoot wine. Only finished it because it was Sunday, and blue laws prevented us from purchasing any. Some dinners just aren't as good with iced tea or Coke.;-)

We have slurping wines and fine wines. Our favorite slurping wine is Coastal Ridge at $9.19 for a 1.5L at Kroger. I believe we used to pay $7 or $8 a glass for it at Shades.
