Hey, if you've been hearing anything about the new restaurant Niche on Sidney Street, believe only the good stuff and get yosef there immediately! Went last night, every morsel was to die for! The owner--Christian is his name--couldn't have been nicer and more down-to-earth, our waitress--Camille is her name, she's a grad student in opera!--was friendly, attentive and knowledgable. The place is aesthetically cool, and it was an all-around fantastic evening. Oh--and I got to meet police chief Joe Mokwa after Camille blabbed to him that I had a crush on him!

Peapod, it's nice to see a good restaurant review! I have a good friend who lives in Portland Oregon and just this morning she wrote to me. This is what she had to say about the restaurant that she and her husband (H) dined at:

"Last night was a huge ridiculous dinner at a beautiful
restaurant that got everything wrong , just a little.
They had to take H's dinner (scallops) back because
they were gritty, but then my dinner was cold to begin
with, really cold by the time his dinner came back
out. Dessert was good, could have been great but it
was cold too...orange walnut bread pudding in an
orange creme anglais..but it was cold and the cream
anglaise was a cupful instead of a small puddle of
it..sort of a blob of bread pudding in the middle of a
bowl of soup..but the good taste was there, so they
don't get too many marks against them for that..but we
are not returning..$100- for dinner should get you hot
food that tastes good ( we are not sooo very picky are
we?)"

See, Peapod, aren't you lucky that you had a good dinner when there are obviously lots of not-so-good ones out there? :D

And speaking of restaurants, are you going out for a special dinner when you are in SoWal next week?

Oh, I loved reading her review, even though I'm sorry for her loss. :lolabove:
Honestly, last night they got everything right. No misstep at any point in the meal. And, ironically, someone in our group had scallops, too, and they were nothing short of amazing. I forgot to say my dessert was "liquid chocolate cake" accompanied by homemade candy cane gelato--delicious! And there was a pumpkin bread pudding with candied kumquats that got rave reviews from our table.
We will go out for a special dinner on Thursday--I think I've narrowed it down to FOOW or Borago. Anyone want to cast a vote? :D

FOOW has gotten favorable reviews from RO and Sueshore, I know, and Borago seems to be everyone's favorite. Hard choice!

Last time we were in town we dined at Cafe 30A, for the first time. The food was great and the service was even better and the dessert was sinful.

Pea...that is a hard choice, but here's my two cents! I like the food at Borago a bit more (those scallops make me swoon!)...the atmosphere at Flopping Fish is a bit more plush and serene...service at both is excellent!! I can't wait to hear all about your special trip...I am getting SO excited for you!

You are too sweet being all excited for me! The scallops at Borago might be calling to me... We have some family members who rave about a meal they had there, so the votes are starting to stack up.
Just pray that I don't go into shock from all the relaxing!

We've eaten at FOOW several times on trips to SOWAL--I think its a very good, but not great, restaurant. I guess we were spoiled by Sandors--which was a fabulous place--inventive food, wonderful service, great wine list. FOOW has very nice food--but it seems to be following, not making trends in their signature dishes (I mean, Highland Bar and Grill in Bham had fancy grits dishes years ago!). And its wine list is vastly overpriced.
(We were also spoiled by the restaurant scene in ST Louis when we lived there--lived in Compton Heights, and we could have eaten at a new place every night for a year and not duplicated any one.) The Vietnamese places alone were amazing....but I digress. Glad to know there's another good one, but I'm not surprised.

Thanks for your input! Glad to hear you enjoyed your eating career in St. Louis while here! :D You don't say if you've found anything you like now that Sandor's is gone...

When we visit Belleville, there is always a trek to Al's for a big family dinner! I am famous there!
