Regulating deadly weapons and preventing violent crime have an inverse relationship. The UK consistently faces higher crime rates, and DC significantly outpaces the country and both have stringent restrictions on deadly weapons.

How does the UK compare with the US on gun deaths?

Crime is far more than gun deaths. To get an accurate picture, look at violent crime. In 2007 there were 467 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants (per FBI website) in the US. In 2007 in the UK, 8,904 per 100,000 (ukhomeoffice). The US spells is out but to get the UK I took the 5,427,600 violent crimes reported in 2007 divided by the 7/08 population estimate of 61 million people. By those numbers you are 19 times more likely to be a victim of violent crime than in the UK.

How about you two meet in the middle and compare crimes were a gun was used since this is talking about banning types of guns? Sometimes a gun can be used and not lead to death.

There is no changing the fact that there are many guns whose intended purpose is to kill people and commit crimes with them.

What is so wrong with getting rid of those weapons, making people register them, or having basic restrictions about who can own them - like barring convicted felons or mentally ill people from purchasing them? :dunno:

The government isn't trying to take away everyone's guns - they're trying to lower the body count and make us all safer.

Great ideas! You mean like these basic restrictions (from: NRA-ILA ::):

"A Citizen`s Guide to Federal Firearms Laws

A summary of federal restrictions on the purchase, sale, possession, and transportation of firearms and ammunition"

"Provided that federal law and the laws of both the dealer`s and purchaser`s states and localities are complied with:
 • An individual 21 years of age or older may acquire a handgun from a dealer federally licensed to sell firearms in the individual`s state of residence
 • An individual 18 years of age or older may purchase a rifle or shotgun from a federally licensed dealer in any state
It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer to sell, deliver, or transfer a firearm unless the federal firearms licensee receives notice of approval from a prescribed source approving the transfer.
Sale of a firearm by a federally licensed dealer must be documented by a federal form 4473, which identifies and includes other information about the purchaser, and records the make, model, and serial number of the firearm. Sales to an individual of multiple handguns within a five-day period require dealer notification to the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Violations of dealer record keeping requirements are punishable by a penalty of up to $1000 and one year`s imprisonment."

"Ineligible Persons

The following classes of people are ineligible to possess, receive, ship, or transport firearms or ammunition:
 • Those convicted of crimes punishable by imprisonment for over one year, except state misdemeanors punishable by two years or less.
 • Fugitives from justice.
 • Unlawful users of certain depressant, narcotic, or stimulant drugs.
 • Those adjudicated as mental defectives or incompetents or those committed to any mental institution.
 • Illegal aliens.
 • Citizens who have renounced their citizenship.
 • Those persons dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.
 • Persons less than 18 years of age for the purchase of a shotgun or rifle.
 • Persons less than 21 years of age for the purchase of a firearm that is other than a shotgun or rifle.
 • Persons subject to a court order that restrains such persons from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner.
 • Persons convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
Persons under indictment for a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year are ineligible to receive, transport, or ship any firearm or ammunition. Under limited conditions, relief from disability may be obtained from the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, or through a pardon, expungement, restoration of rights, or setting aside of a conviction."

What's so wrong with getting rid of those guns you deem only intended to kill people or commit crimes?
The same thing that's wrong with any restriction of individual choice. Why sell cars that go over 100 mph? What about private airplanes or cellular phones? There are countless things and activities available to US citizens that are not in the best interest of public safety in some opinion.

We already have good enough gun laws.

Firearm use by offender
Department of Justice

Approximately 203,300 prisoners serving a sentence in a State or
Federal prison in 1997 were armed when they committed the crime for
which they were serving time. An estimated 18% of State prison inmates
and 15% of Federal inmates reportedusing, carrying, or possessing a firearm
during the crime for which they were sentenced. In 1991, 16% of State
inmates and 12% of Federal inmates said they were armed at the time of
their offense.
Among all inmates in 1997, 9% of those in State prisons and 2% of those
in Federal prisons said they fired a gun while committing their current offense.

Of violent offenders, 18% of State inmates and 9% of Federal inmates
discharged a firearm. Less than 2% of inmates serving time for a drug,
property, or public-order offense fired a gun during the crime that resulted in
their prison sentence.
Among prisoners who carried a firearm during the offense for which they were
serving time in 1997, 14% had bought or traded for the gun from a store,
pawnshop, flea market, or gun show.

The 1997 percentage who had acquired their firearm at a retail outlet
represented a significant drop from 21% in 1991. The percentage of
inmates receiving their gun from family or friends rose from 34% in 1991 to
40% in 1997.

Less than 2% of inmates reported
carrying a fully automatic or
military-style semiautomatic firearm

I've come accross every kind of weapon imaginable in twelve years of law enforcement, when it comes to criminals and gang bangers. Everything from cheap 25 semi-autos to fully automatic rifles.

More than anything, I come across cheap handguns purchased off the street or stolen. Passing laws only compels the law abiding to follow it. There will always be open shop on the black market. These criminals these days buy bullet resistant vests as well.

any opinion expressed by Whodat1 is his and in no way represents the opinions, view or policies of any law enforcement agency.

Because that ignores the deterrence that predators take into account when they judge whether or not their victim is armed. Regardless, I'm just arguing now for fun. Nothing they post will make be believe that government has or should have the power to disarm those who consent to being governed.

If you are a proponent of guns, buy ammo right now.
