So I was curious as to what the actual numbers are involving gun deaths that occur in violent crimes. I think this is the most recent report from the Department of Justice. Some interesting nuggets:
Firearm-related crime has plummeted since 1993, then slightly increased in 2005
According to the 1997 Survey of State Prison Inmates, among those possessing a gun, the source of the gun was from -
a flea market or gun show for fewer than 2%
a retail store or pawnshop for about 12%
family, friends, a street buy, or an illegal source for 80%
During the offense that brought them to prison, 15% of State inmates and 13% of Federal inmates carried a handgun, and about 2%, a military-style semiautomatic gun.

As I have opined before, the call to ban 'assault rifles' is rather knee jerk and sounds like a good idea until the actual data is examined. Assault rifle attacks make for good, intense 72 hour non-stop news coverage, but it is
the handgun that is the true gun menace. If one is serious about eliminating gun violence, then the handgun is the weapon that must be done away with. Of course this is an impossible task and a much harder political sell as far more 'mainstream' people own handguns than the few scapegoats who own 'assault rifles'.
My conclusion is that those who advocate an assault rifle ban either have misplaced priorities if a true reduction in gun violence is the goal
or see an assault rifle ban as a small first step in a long process of doing away with gun ownership rights.
