Ok. Reality check here--this is a local thread regarding the varied emotions surrounding a discussion about one speed bump on 30A? Hmmm..I think I need to go now and have my imagination captured by watching the new pavers being placed over at Rosemary Beach.

I've always loved the pavers at Rosemary and Alys. And I wonder why the Walton County Road Department can't just use pavers to make the crossover/speedbumps. I guess it's because they would look good, rather than the gaudy display of paint, reflectors and gawd awful red posts that they used to decorate the intersection of 395 and 30-A. As I've said before, you just can't beat our county road department for pure comedy.

You must be the only one because I never see anyone give a turn signal there.

BTW that's one reason of the many reasons that the Toscana development at that intersection (eight 4000-square-foot homes) failed to get approved by the BCC -- too many vehicles coming in and out at that intersection.

Like I said, I use my signal there because of an idenitical intersection on the way to my high school many years ago; the informative street sign got me into the habit of using my signal then and later on at 30-A/Eastern Lake Rd. One reason they may not have the advisory sign on 30-A is because westbound Eastern Lake Rd traffic was re-routed up by the ResortQuest office, but you still have tons of walkers, runners, and bikers coming through there and I think it would help (if motorists got into the habit of using signals there).

Speed bumps are necessary especially when people disregard pedestrians at crossovers. That's why my sister and I beat on hoods.

I also like the signs that they have in various places in Atlanta (see http://www.sowal.com/bb/sowal-lounge/53785-fearful-stop-sign.html#post723407). Last week I suggested installing these in some places in our town where I had difficulties when I was running (pre runners knee). One has already gone up. Not wild about more signs, but better than someone getting hit by a vehicle at a place where pedestrians have the right-of-way.

I don't think it matters since Dawn did exactly what everyone feared and has stacked the board with her cronies.

A lot of things that Dawn has done and will do in the future should be feared. She can get the BCC to do whatever she wants them to do.

I saw some of those signs in Athens last week (but unfortunately not on the North Oconnee River Greenway that I ran on and is actually more of a glorified sidewalk through traffic with no special crossing rights). When running and confronted with an oblivious driver or one who (intentionally) buzzes me on the shoulder, I just stop and stare at them. I got an "I'm sorry" from a driver once.

I think 99% of the problem is drivers unaware of pedestrian/bike crossings, bikers/pedestrians who go into the road without caring whether they are visible to a driver, and dumb arse signage/confusing crossings.

While I think it's dumb (and has been shown it's pretty useless by the Wheelhouse if brains are not also present) a raised crossing does help make some drivers and path users more aware.

But it does nothing to stop people from walking/biking straight into traffic on 30-A.

IMO good striping and common sense are what is needed - not more money thrown at the problem.

In my opinion the Atlanta signs in my post make sense because they are a constant reminder of pedestrian rights.

Having now driven over the "abomination" I gotta point out that you'll all be over it in 6 months.
