I have absolutely no desire to keep those eligible for Medicaid from receiving it. At the same time, I truly feel that a portion of the left in DC is trying to use the healthcare debate as a window to amnesty. The packaging jobs in DC are disgusting on both sides of the aisle and this one in particular would be disturbing considering the words that came out of the President's mouth. At the same time it wouldn't necessarily be a lie if they were provided amnesty as his words were that we wouldn't provide healthcare to illegals.

He said there's nothing in the healtcare plan authorizing healthcare to illegals. It's obvious that in practice there could be enforcement issues. I can't imagine why anyone would have expected Obama to address that in his speech. He's the president, not a beat cop.

I still don't understand why having ID requirements is so problematic. :dunno:

I can't do anything without photo ID - cash a check, stay in a hotel, fly, get an alcoholic beverage, use a credit card, drive a car, get medical care, buy certain OTC cold medication, vote.

When I was a kid I had to get a state photo ID card so I could go to Canada and back.

IMO free health care is quite the carrot for someone to get a $25 state photo id.................especially if a social worker or similar were allowed to waive the fee.

I do think that the "illegals are stealing from us" argument is a distraction that is used far too often, but I really don't think proving your identity is too much to ask when we are shelling out money.

What about a fingerprinting system instead of a photo id?

Right now, the proof is in an affadavit, stating the recipient is who he/she says he/she is, and that they are a citizen. This allows the feds to then prosecute for fraud if it turns out they aren't.

Fake IDs are a dime a dozen. (Well, actually, they are a little more expensive than that, but you know what I mean). Illegals often have driver's licenses. So, where does that leave you?

And I am still enough of a Jeffersonian to blanch at the idea of a central fingerprint database of all US citizens.

Why are fingerprints worse than photos and extensive personal and financial files?

We already fingerprint anyone arrested, anyone entering the country who isn't a US citizen, babies when they are born (feet anyway - that's where I got the idea BTW), people cashing checks if they don't have an account.......

The footprints are on souvenir birth certificates; they don't go into a central database. I am not sure they even do that anymore.

As Sinclair Lewis said, when Fascism comes to America....you know the rest. And, they will want our fingerprints. For our own safety, of course.

I may have to invest in militia supplies, then, because they will be a growth industry.

Do you have a problem with them fingerprinting and photographing every NON-citizen who comes into the US?

I guess my lack of outrage is due to the fact that fingerprints seem sort of innocuous when I consider all of the other info they can easily access and the things they can do to me because of the Patriot Act.

P.S. What do you think about the tracking chip in my passport?

Well, if we were stopping them and were therefore able to photograph and fingerprint them, that would be dandy. Seems like while we were at it, though, we might just turn them around and send them back. You know, at that Official Illegal Immigrant Processing Center.

And I am not a fan of the Patriot Act, either.

For the fiscal conservatives consider these scenarios. I am using the term illegal because it's just to long to write out immigrant each time.

1.) An illegal has an abscess and goes to a doctor to have it drained and treated. Approximate cost to US citizens in fraud $100.00.

2.) An illegal has an abscess and can't see a doctor so leaves it untreated. They eventually pass out from pain or infection at home, in a social situation, or at work. Someone calls 911 and the illegal is rushed to the emergency room by ambulance where they are treated and admitted to the hospital. Once conscious it is determined the illegal is to be deported, but not until they are medically stable.

Which is the cheaper option that will save money?

I was referring to the fact that currently anyone going through the proper channels to enter our country is finger printed (4 fingers on R hand, R thumb, 4 fingers on L hand, L thumb) and photographed.

If you have a problem with them fingerprinting Americans, do you have a problem with them fingerprinting everyone else?

A large percentage of "illegal" immigrants entered our country through the proper channels, so I guess we are technically processing them.
