perhaps the increased drownings occur because the consumers dont wait 30 minutes...maybe mom was right

I have spent a lot of time in the gulf and have seen hundreds of sharks. We use to get out of the water when we would see one now we just keep and eye on them. They come around and tend to leave.

Also keep in mind they do not hang out in the 30A area. The rents are high here and shark are more of a blue collar creature. They seem to vacation in more affordable areas.

I'll bet you do see a bunch of sharks spending so much time out searching for the perfect wave. Other than the three nurse sharks I saw on bottom last year this was the only other one I was with since moving here.

In Louisiana I have had small ones swim right next to me while I surf fished but swimming with a shark is another deal all together. That's pretty neat that you've seen so many that you have kind of habituated to them. I wonder what size you've seen and types. Pretty cool though Bobby. Thanks for sharing.

About this time last year I was surfing with a good friend and he said, " you may want to lift your legs up". I look down and this beautiful 6'-7' shark is cruising direct under me. My legs came up so fast I almost fell off the board. I am sure we look like idiots out there to those graceful creatures. If they wanted us it would be over very fast. I fear public speaking and rats far more then shark. :D

I just wish we could get an estimate of just how many cruise the shoreline that are never seen. While my hubby was working at a gulf front house we would go up on the second floor balcony and watch them swim by. Some days we would see none...others they would be everywhere. There was one that I swear was stalking some folks one day. It would swim in close then circle out and they would walk a bit farther and it would come back in close. We watched this happen over and over for about 30 minutes. Fortunately they were just walking the beach and not going into the water.... we tried to yell at them but they just waved and went on their oblivious way.

Mike - wow - I too wish you would have had your camera! I know that was a treat for you seeing the shark.

Also, that's neat to know about the sand dollars and shells at Grayton!

Thanks for sharing.

I will be there in the middle of July, now I fear for my life.. NOT !!!!
More fearfull for my grandkids on the highways being a few feet from massive 18 wheelers and the statistics that go along with driving. We will have a 1700 mile round trip just to become shark bait. I do take it seriously but there are 34,000 killed on highways each year in the US. How many are crippled, permanently injured? I'm sure we all know of someone family or friends that have lost lives in accidents, I know I have, but it isn't glorified like the one shark attack. Simple thinks to remember, don't go out in early morning or late evening, don't wear ANYTHING shiny (jewelery) and of course to my way of thinking for women during "that time of the month". Oh wait do they tell you any of that on the news after that one shark attack?
