WOW!!! Another experience today. I had just been out by myself and decided I wanted my kids to kayak above me while I snorkeled. I had just pushed the kayak out over teh second sandbar, with me trailing it bny aboyt 15 feet.

I looked down and a HUGE shark was swimming about 20 feet off to my left. I watched it for a second and then put my head above water, asking that my son paddle back to me, since the shark was in its direction.

My kids looked shocked when I said there was a huge shark in the water. I emphasized, calmingly, but directly, to paddle more efficiently.

I entered the one person kayak and we looked down. There were suddenly two big shark swimming around the kayak. My daughter was being rational and wanted her feet back on shore, so I paddled her back. My son, like me, being somewhat disfunctional, cerbrally speaking, wanted to paddle back out with me.

When we arrived at the tail end of the middle section and second sandbar, sure enough, two shark swam together under the kayak. I saw another right over the sandbar. They appeared to be big nurse sharks but I wasn't 100 percent sure. I wanted to establish certainty prior to getting out with them.

I ended up getting out and soon had someone approach us in his kayak. He said he had been up in One Seagrove Place (highrise) and noticed the object next to us and wanted to know what it was, asking if it was a turtle. I informed him that it was sharks and he said he thought it might have been that too.

Anyway, it was a real neat experience. Agian, I am so sorry I haven't had access to my camera, as it would have been spine tingling video. Hopefully I'll have it repaired soon.

My brother is scheduled to retrun here soon and we plan on doing some diving in the area. My camera should be back shortly, although I can't take it below 10 feet. We'll see if I can get another shark sighting soon, but this one on film.

Adding to our amazing stories in Paradise.......

We went kayaking in the Grayton Beach area today. Water was beautiful away from shore (bloom at the surf). First we paddled over two nurse sharks just cruising by....then we encountered 6 different pods of dolphin! Each pod had 5-6 adults having a great time. As I positioned our kayaks, I actually had two different pods cruise under me. That was terrific. We even got a bonus as a couple of "frisky" dolphins were very playful as we watched. Kinda felt like the director of an adult film being produced.

Looking forward to tomorrow's outing....

Funny stiff, I mean, stuff, about the dolphin. A fellow kayaker and I discussed not seeing as many dolphin of late, so its funny that you mentioned having seen them. Good news.

I'd love to see them up close to the kayak, especially with my kiddies. I'll hopefully get out there tomorrow again. Each day that passes with my kids is another day closer to them leaving  It feels so much like home for me right now. And what a wonderful place to have my family. We've enjoyed our time, even as fleeting as it has been.

Hopefully tonight and tomorrow continue to be wonderful memories, although my daughter may not consider shark encounters to be so wonderful ;-):shark:

We haven't seen many this year either, so what a treat to see that many. We were able to get within 5-10 ft of the pods at surface, by just floating into their paths. Great memory.

Try the Grayton area tomorrow, who knows, they may be paid by TDC for the tourists

Rapunzel and I were kayaking at Grayton tonight. Her kayak was acting funky, it is a Hobie Revolution, so I theorized her mirage drive fins were bent (and they were). I jumped out of mine to attempt a second sand bar adjustment, and almost instantly saw a shark below me. It looked like a nurse shark, maybe 3 feet or so. No biggee, I thought. I began getting ready to go under the kayak to work on the fins, and noticed a second shark about the same size as the first was now checking me out. So were the ramoras. That was enough adventure for one day without a mask to see that these truly were docile nurse sharks, so back on the kayak I got. I want to go back armed with a camera and a mask. It was really cool.
