Everytime (and it is now daily) Senator Sessoms of Alabama brings up the "wise latina...blah blah" speech it is totally making him appear to be more of a real racist, either that or he is pandering to his constituency for his 'next" re-election....
(talk about the need for term limits!!!! Jeez).:bang:

Same way a US born Scooterbug can be German and Scottish - your racial heritage and your citizenship are 2 different things.

I agree with you. HOWEVER, she didn't say she comes from Puerto Rican heritage. She said she is Puerto Rican. I don't say that I am Scottish and English -- because I am not. I was born in the USA, thereby making me an American, just like Sonia. Why does she say she is Puerto Rican? Is it because she hopes that it will give her a Hispanic edge? America is a blend of nationalities, and most come here to leave those other nations' rule, seeking opportunity, and they quickly want to be recognized as Americans. I'm not sure why someone who is actually born here wants to be recognized as someone who is from a country where many others flee to come to the US, unless of course, it is to receive some advantage.

Embrace your heritage, but don't get confused. You are an American if you are born in the USA.

I would hope that a wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences, would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life.

Isn't this her quote? The current justices have certainly dealt with life experiences and one can deduce that they have dealt with discrimination. She has lived a white man life; therefore, based upon her statement in many/some situations a white man can hope to reach a better conclusion based upon his rich life experiences that she hasn't lived.

I think she is qualifed. Her statement, however is over the top. Personally, I would prefer to have justices who come out of the gate unbiased despite his/her rich life experiences.

Diversity is always desirable.

It's great that a person wants to empathize with others, but that has no weight in my opinion, for the role of the US Supreme Court. They sit in those seats not to empathize, but to enforce the rules of law which are established by our Founding Documents and our Legislature. Empathizing would be better used in operating a homeless or food shelter.

She says she's Puerto Rican because she's Puerto Rican.

For example, Tootsie says she's Italian - do you feel she says that to get an "Italian edge" or "some advantage", or do you think she says it because that is her heritage and she is proud of it?

America is a wonderful place because we are composed of so many different races and cultures - not because we freak out every time someone is a little different from us.

See my above explanation of her quote. Different heritage can lead to different viewpoints and experiences, which is why it's good to have a diverse Supreme Court. She didn't say she would come to a better conclusion, but that she hoped she would. Desiring to come to the best conclusion is laudable.

It's not always bias as much as a lack of experience or knowledge of culture. I agree that diversity is always desirable, and I think that's the point that so many people are missing.

No one is unbiased due to their life experiences. Not you, me or anyone else. Our attitudes are based on on our perceptions and those are based on our environment. We can strive to not be that way, but to think that any judge that enters the bench doesn't have a bias is to belive they are not human. They must strive to uphold the law, no matter the consequence or their personal beliefs. To see Sessions accuse her of racism is like; Pot meet kettle. Ugg.
Thank you for your (as always) perfectly written opinion. I agree completely. And since we are going to have some bias, it should at least be diverse.

Yes, you're right. And, I view this as EVERYONE has different viewpoints and experiences, despite heritage, race, ethnicity. One day our Supreme Court will have representation of many more diversities, but I hope it is based upon merit and not their respective diversities.

I believe she is qualified to uphold the Constitution and properly interpret the law with no biases to any group, but to evaluate all circumstances from a position of equality.

Sessions is bitter because of his rejection to a higher court. IMO Graham is just over the top. He wants to punish the judge because of the president. He is so angry JM did not win so that he and JM could run the country. Graham has repeatedly stated that the judge would not have been his pick. I think he keeps forgetting who makes the selection.

I wonder had she never made the wise Latino comment what would the repubs have to question her on. Judge Sotomayer rulings show she follows the law.

Aleonard your post at 8:12 am yesterday is one I totally agree with.

Senators Sessons and Graham just need copies of the taped proceding to splice into the next campaign commercials--it is for them a wonderful oppty. to talk to their base back home to show they have not given up on guns and religion.
