We just finished decorating the tree!

There have definitely been some unique ornaments added over the years - my brother's salamander and cartoon character he made of plasticine, the Republican Task Force 1985 ornament, a cat w/ springs and jingle bells for arms/legs, a lobster and crab made of raffia, paper pop-up ornaments from MOMA, a green felt poodle, an Incan cross-stitch creature - you name it.

This year's additions - rocks! Mama Scooterbug added multi-colored slices of agate and chunks of citrine and amethyst to the mix.

What are the weirdest or least traditional ornaments on your tree? (dunno if we need to disqualify Sowal Exchange ornaments.)

Geez, for a second there I thought you were posting about your sowal ornament exchange ornament.

My tree here in the 'Ham is traditional red & gold.

My beach tree is my favorite! It is a white tree with seaglass green/blue bow and streamers with pearl garland. It has all kinds of beach stuff that we collect from our travels, mermaids, fish, seashells, a cow in a moomoo :)biggrin:), a glass Las Vegas showgirl, martini glass of swarovski crystal, big diamond rings, surfin' santa, flamingos, hand painted ornaments from one of local sowal celebrity artists, a glass collectable Elvis in his "Blue Hawaii" attire. I use fake white snow as my white sand around the tree instead of a skirt. It looks much better in person.

Here is a picture of it last year. Of course it has more "stuff" this year.

I adore ornaments of all kinds! some of our faves are R2D2 and Yoda. spiderman of course. all the rudolph characters... my little soldier with a long hairy beard is the best. the ceramic dinosaurs have been phased out - they were rather hideous. lots of handmade stuff, some made of paper and felt and glitter, etc.

The man of the house had the best time making them for you.

Our "best" ornament is small flat pottery piece in the shape of a barn, with a beautiful blue glaze on it. We bought it in the Pennsylvania Dutch country on our way to New England in December 1988 to see my family. What's weird about it? Philippa was only six weeks old at the time, Alex wasn't even two years old, and we had two cats in the car with us. I mean, what kind of weirdos would make a 23 hour trip just so they'd be at the parental estate for Christmas??? We must have been nuts. I look at that ornament with the date 12/88 pencilled on the back and I shake my head in total disbelief. I think we were very young back then.

My favorites:

Two blown glass ornaments from Germany: a garlic and a pickle.
The kids, (both young and old) love the tradition of winning a prize if they're the first to "find the pickle."

Although not an ornament...my old fashioned "bubble lights"

My most favorite ornaments on my tree are the one's my son made in daycare and kindergarden. They are a little ragged now, but they still on my tree every year. One of them has his little hand print on it from when he was about 2. Every year when I hang it on the tree and see that little hand, it brings tears to my eyes to know he will soon be 16 and his hand print is so much bigger now. Where have the years gone. Too fast they have come I tell you, too fast. ;-)

p.s. my sowal ornaments are favorites as well.

I agree, they are front and center!
Kathy, I have a j-o-y ornament with my youngest son (now 31) age 5 picture in the 0. Its my fav. The joy is so fraved they y is half gone. It's just red (now faded red) construction paper.

So this year I took all the kids picture in my sunday school class and made the joy ornament out of foam (hoping that last longer)

I guess the strangest is a frog lying on the beach with a drink beside him.

I love the ornaments the kids have made but I have several favorites too. My beachy ornaments top the list...I also always buy an ornament on vacations. One of my favorites is from Door County Wisconsin...it's a cow with a dangly bell at the bottom.

BB, I love, love, love your tree.

Shelley, we started the pickle tradition last year in our family. I had never heard of it before that.
