Because I am not allowed to post the dangers of tanning in the same thread as a tanning salon opening, I will post it here. Tanning has been shown to cause melanoma, which kills 8000 people in the US every year. Melanoma is a politically correct cancer because tanning is associated with being "healthy." Lung cancer and liver cancer are not as lucky and now both smoking and binge drinking (primary causes of these cancers) are no longer in style. People will continue to tan because they are stupid and vain, but I will not stay silent on this message board because the moderators support skin cancer.

I've never darkened the door of a tanning salon because nothing deters sunworshipping like a loved one constantly having nickel sized chunks of flesh cut out of them because they got "a tan" earlier in life.

Criticizing someone for opening a tanning salon at the beach (isn't that like opening an ice store in Alaska) won't keep people from tanning or getting cancer. Looking around Sowal, I don't think smoking, binge drinking, OR tanning will fade in popularity anytime soon.

I hope you don't use a cell phone, use of cell phones have also been linked to brain cancer... and microwaves and on and on and on....

While I don't believe for one minute that the moderator supports skin cancer, I do agree that tanning beds are very dangerous because of the link to melanoma. I have never been to a tanning bed but I have a twin brother who went frequently in college and into his early 30's. He was diagnosed with melanoma a few years ago. Luckily he caught it early and is fine now but he has no doubt that it developed as a result of the tanning beds. I have lectured my daughter's repeately on this topic but alot of people, including my daughters, have the "it won't happen to me" mentality. If I had to have an artificial tan I would go the spray tanning route.

Thank you for sharing. I have to admit that I just paid for my one and only month of tanning in my whole life and I will not pay for another. It is nice to get a little color for the spring but it is definitely not worth one's health.

So true - I always tell my daughters that a tan fades but the damage is lasting.

Overuse of anything is bad, cellphones included, which is why I try to use my land line and my car is wired for bluetooth so no brain cancer here. I don't smoke and have about 1 glass of wine every 3 days, although once a month I will enjoy 2-3 martinis. My only vice is not exercising as much as I should, but I am still only 175 lbs and can run 5k without stopping for rest. People who overdo anything aren't smart and the opposite of smart is stupid. So I don't care if I turn a few people of by calling stupid by its name. Knowingly doing something that could kill you is stupid. Sorry if it is offensive

I suggested you start a new thread instead of trashing a legal business on their thread. Would you go to their tanning salon and stand outside with a sign that said "tanning causes cancer"? It's the same thing.

If your real aim is to educate and protect people, why not do it in a resonable and respectful manner?
