Overuse of anything is bad, cellphones included, which is why I try to use my land line and my car is wired for bluetooth so no brain cancer here. I don't smoke and have about 1 glass of wine every 3 days, although once a month I will enjoy 2-3 martinis. My only vice is not exercising as much as I should, but I am still only 175 lbs and can run 5k without stopping for rest. People who overdo anything aren't smart and the opposite of smart is stupid. So I don't care if I turn a few people of by calling stupid by its name. Knowingly doing something that could kill you is stupid. Sorry if it is offensive

The opposite of smart is dumb...

stupid is a ugly word!

I apologize to the moderator he was right to move the discussion. Tanning salons, liquor stores, tobacco companies all have the right to make money killing folks. And I support that right.

Dumb = Stupid to me; I really don't get the difference. I would not feel better if someone called me dumb vs stupid. BTW, I think the fact that I have to post this is stupid:rotfl:

I would like to thank you for looking out for my well being.... now how about coming and standing at the intersection of Bay Drive and stopping the idiots that have cut in front of me, almost causing a head-on collision, 4 times in the last 2 days. I would think they are pretty stupid to not realize that the persons proceeding straight across the intersection have the right of way. I honestly feel that some stupid person at that intersection is going to kill me before the sun does.

While I can agree with the effects of over-exposure and cancer, I would like to point out that If managed properly a tanning facility can also help to aquire a safe tan with out over-exposure that most people get trying to play catchup on the weekends or in a weeks vacation. And a healthy base tan can help protect an individual from burning and overexposing themselves to the sun. While there used to be no regulatory restrictions or even basic education on the tanning process or tanning beds, it is now regualted and inspected by the FTC & FDA. In order to open a Tanning facility there are now strict rquirements. You must pass an exam with the State of location that requires that you learn the layers of the skin, effects of sun, the difference between UVB, UVA, & UVR rays that are where the dangers come into play. You are required to learn and recognize the different types of skin cancer as well as the effects of exposure to the human eye and all medicines or any other products that can have an effect on the amount of exposure a person can expect. In essence anyone opening a salon is probably more careful than the average person and can help in educating the general public on how to Tan safely. We are all exposed to the sun on a daily basis, most skin cancers are on the face, hands & lower arms because those are the areas that we forget to protect. While tanning beds block out a majority of the UVB rays & UVC rays all togther they allow for the UVA rays to tan a persons skin with out all of the dangers that being in the sun everyday can cause. Tanning is acutally the body's natural defense mechanism to protect itself from the sun's rays.
PS Don't forget some Dermatologist use a particular type of tanning bulbs in booths to help treat psorasis patients.
A Little Education:UVC is the shortest, most harmful wavelength of ultraviolet rays. UVB is the medium wavelength and although overexposure can cause erythema (sunburn), a controlled amount is necessary to initiate tanning in the skin.
UVA is the longest wavelength and is responsible for the completion of the tanning process.
Sincerly,
Tan & Healthy

I don't even like tanning in the sun. I recently saw a news story on tanning salons and they were cautioning people about the sanitation risks involved with naked people using the tanning bed, and the beds not being sanitized afterward. I am sure there are places which follow the rules, and that might not be of concern. They were also cautioning against not using proper eye protection in the tanning booths, as the rays can damage the eyes, even while closed. The tanning beds scare me as much as spending all day in the sun, unprotected. I use 30spf block even for daily running around, when I will be in the car, yet I am still very tan.

  • I don't tan voluntarily. The sun does it to me. I could wear turtlenecks, hoods, long pants and socks to the beach, but I'm afraid I'll have a heat stroke.

  • My dental hygienist told me that I was going to die from not flossing every @#$% five minutes. As I have told Aggie B, I floss regularly, but this woman is crazy. However, her prediction has brought me a lot of relief. Since she is so certain that I'm going to die from not flossing, I no longer wear my seat belt, I smoke 3 packs a day, I cross against the light, run with scissors, fly kites in thunderstorms, and do trapeze stunts without a net. Life is great.
