..... I challenge all of them to keep an extra eye out on this young lady and report back to her family if they see something is amiss.

More than you folks will ever know, I can empathize with the plight of this young lady's family (I'm not sure what the others' "excuse" could be)--but I do know that this crap needs to stop or the young lady will use her situation to rationalized any unacceptable behavior for the rest of her life. To "feel sorry" for her and her family will do more harm than good.

That was part of what kept us in line too - nothing insures good behavior like many eyes watching in a small town!

Whether it's the old lady who tells on you for not wearing your bike helmet when you ride to school, the grocer who calls the local cop when your late night purchases of TP, eggs, and various condiments while dressed in black seems suspicious, or the neighbors who call when there are weird cars in the driveway, it takes a village!

Excusing someone's behavior or giving them a free pass because of a past tragedy is a disservice both to them & their future AND anyone else who suffered the same thing and didn't become a delinquent.

You all would probably be shocked if you knew how we use to run on 30a! Not much else to do back in the day...

I was probably right there with ya, BobbyJ!!!!! We were hellions for sure.....and still good kids. We both had amazing parents and I think that shows now that we have our own kids.....but kids will be kids no matter how hard you police them. They will find a way.

My heart goes out to Grandma...she has had more heartache than I think I could handle. I think I am going to call her and see if there is anything I can do to help. She loves her grandkids and so did their mother...whom I knew well. Reach out in the community for the kids and be supportive. Grab a bunch of them and take then canoeing...or give them a beach party...something!

I applaud the fact that you're reaching out to your friend--it does take a village to look after our children today.

When you, Bobby J and I were "young hellions" the world was quite a different place--things have changed since then. I cringe every time I hear the comment, "he/she is a good kid and his/her parents are good people" because it is the same statement that I hear over and over again when News reporters interview neighbors after a small, bloody, violated corpse is extracted from a drainage ditch.

You can never to too safe concerning our kids...true. Unleashing them is a hard thing to do, but you have to give them opportunities to spread their wings and hope for the best. Curfew should be mandatory in every home...male or female. And stick to it. If a kid is spending the night somewhere...call the other parent to confirm and then check in at some point...call the other parents home phone. Forget the kids cell phone.....

Bobby J and I survived...by the Grace of God...no doubt. Others were less fortunate. We had great parents who cared, which set an example for us to pass on to our kids. We can only watch and hope for the best.

I thought nightswimming was crazy in my time! Taking over an empty house is criminal. If I had done that I would have begged the police to keep me in jail away from father!

The scary part is all of the foreclosed and/or partially constructed abandoned homes in the area. I've spent a lot of time jogging/biking around Santa Rosa near 30a thinking to myself that someone could squat in some of these homes for months without notice. Even scarier, some of these homes don't have any permanent neighbors nearby. I can think of at least three subdivisions with swimming pools that are chained down because no one is living in the homes within the subdivision. I have a foreclosed home next door that has been vacant for almost a year! There is yet to be a for sale sign. I've been told that the banks are so overwhelmed with foreclosures that they cannot process them all in a timely fashion. But almost a year amazes me. I ask that everyone keep an eye on these type homes. Besides, we are all not so fortunate to have a caretaker dropping by.

Seemed to be an awful lot of cars parked by the Phase IV WaterColor pool. Seemed a little odd since it's the most remote and smallest pool. :dunno:
