Great Sand Dunes is magnificent. We took one last trip there before we left Colorado. It actually has only been a national park for a short time;when the kids were little,we used to camp there a lot on our way down to New Mexico.
Seeing the dunes rise up out of nowhere is almost spooky.
The thing that was cool about GSD (other than the incredible dunes) is how so many people could be there but it never felt crowded.
If you go in late May/early June, the run-off is there and it is a wonderful play place, the closest thing to a beach, other than reservoirs, that Colorado has. Dogs chase frisbees, children splash in the shallow water.
There are also a couple of alligator farms down there. Yup. 'Gators.

Best things:

good health

fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and arugula and a splash of fruity olive oil--with a liberal grinding of pepper

crusty bread

a tumbler of Tempranillo

maybe some new Red Hot Chili Peppers or Matisyahu on the CD player

Friday night, family and friends

It's still quite green, but I have my first homegrown tomato coming along nicely.
Gardening here is an interesting experience, very different from Colorado.

:clap_1: I don't put tomatoes in here until Mid-May or later- I'm so jealous of your green tomato!

I'm going to plant tomatoes and zucchini on our back deck this year. I have lots of herbs growing already on the deck and in the garden. I'm jealous of your green tomato, too! We start planting in mid-may (though I have seedlings growing in the basement already under a grow light).

Believe me, jdarg, it's a first for me!

We'll have to start a Tomato thread. All things tomato. Pics of our tomatoes. Recipes. Growing tips. Biggest 'mater contest. Maybe Kurt should start a whole forum. Well, maybe not that.

heehee--yet another forum

I am actually curious about growing tomatoes here. I mean, I was wondering if flavor is affected by the salty air or whatever. It can get awfully breezy, too.
I am growing the yellow pear variety and another favorite hybrid of mine, Celebrity.
I tried some heirlooms last year, can't remember the name, and they just did okay, not great.
I am completely starting over--it's sad yet happy. I had a humungous rosemary plant, it was 3 feet tall, I gave it to a Denver neighbor. Now I have an itty bitty baby rosemary plant. Ya gotta start somewhere.
Got some basil, too. And some mint for our Mojitos. ;-)

Ok, let's all remember to post photos of our home-grown tomatoes and us eating the first one of the season with the juice and seeds dripping down our chins in the sunshine!

We have a great farmers market here that I go to regularly in the summer, but it's still best to get those tomatoes right off the vine.

And then we can do a big pumpkin contest in the fall!
