When Newt Gingrich compares Islam with Nazism in regard to the proposed mosque in lower Manhattan, that makes life more difficult for our troops overseas. Muslims have a legitimate First Amendment right to put a mosque there. The idiot pastor in Florida does not have a First Amendment right to burn copies of the Quran for the same reason he doesn't have the right to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater -- because it would put people's lives (our troops and embassy personnel) at serious risk. Why the wackadoodle Right chooses to ignore this while imperiling our troops overseas says a great deal about them. Their positions on these two matters are, in my opinion, reprehensible and unpatriotic.

No the wackadoodle left cannot come up with a logical, consistent position. Both the mosque and the burning are legal, both are morally wrong and both in some manner place our troops at risk. The purpose of both the Iman and the Pastor is to garner media attention for themselves and their cause. Neither is very important in the grand scheme of things and talking about both of them takes the discussion away from issues that do matter.

If ever I'm in a crowded theater and there is a fire, I sure hope someone yells, "Fire!"

Burning a book is allowed in the USA, it's just frowned upon by society, and therefore not often done.

Our soldiers fight to protect our freedoms (and for political reasons). They don't fight to limit our freedoms.

Enough about this damn preacher already. He deserves no publicity at all. Lake view too said it best -- we like to blame Muslims for building a mosque instead of realizing the important stuff like the fact that we used going to war in Afghanistan as an excuse to invade Iraq, and in the process we have ran our economy into the ground, costing many innocent lives -- more than were killed on Sept 11 2001 in the jet crashes. Still, terrorists continue and USA is viewed as a bully country by many.

The question I ask myself in trying to figure out this "war" is what would have happened if we had not taken action against Hitler? Can Iraq be compared to Hitler's Germany in some ways? Should we stand idle allowing Sadam to kill his own people? Or, should we go help out people, regardless of location, religion, nationality? We cannot financially afford to save the world, but I do think we need to take a stand for humanity. Is this "war" in Iraq saving humanity? It sure doesn't feel that way, as we have killed many innocent people.

Let's do as Lake view too suggested and gain some real perspective. Forget about the hypocrisy and let's focus on the real problems we have. Our problems are not a preacher with a 30 member congregation. How about the news media dropping the coverage of the war since Obama took office? The media is in the wrong place. The real story is "Why are our troops still in Iraq, while our unborn grandchildren are paying for it?"

I think it all boils down to intentions. The pastor's actions are purposfully petty, inflammatory and intolerant. The mosque means well, but didn't take into account American's inability to separate a religion from it's extremist fringes actions.

Thanks Douglas. I love reading everyone's perspective on these difficult issues, and learn a lot from you all. but, Dougie really knows how to put everything into perspective in a short, respectful and wonderful way that I, as well as many others, really appreciate.

"An Egyptian-born investor in the mosque at Ground Zero said he would sell the site even for a new use. He's already received offers for three times the $4.8 million price of the site but would consider selling for closer to $20 million."

Hmm.

Naive sheep think the Mosque is being built there for a good cause. Heaven forbid they're trying to make a statement to the World and dishonor the victims. They wouldn't really do that right?

The more I read about the real estate deal that lead to this, the more I think we've all been had (including the imam, who was sought out by the investor) by a very shrewd and unscrupulous egyptian real estate flipper looking to make a quick 400%.

"The mosque is morally wrong" if it were 5 blocks away, does that make it morally right?

Reading all of this back and forth and thinking how did we come to this? Do you not all agree that the pastor in Florida and the Imam are really the same? They are just at opposite ends of the spectrum. We need to find the middle.
