Michigan but someday in SoWal as well
My sweet grandmother in Rockford, Il. does not have much time left on this earth. One of the last places I want to go right now would probably be Rockford but after reading this thread for some reason I want to be back on her back porch just hanging out and laughing about the good ol days. Thank you Paula for reminding me it does not have to be somewhere glamorous or beautiful. I think I will go give her a call.

When I was with my grandmother (my nonna) that was my favorite place to be for many years. She didn't have a porch because she lived in an apartment, but we just sat around, ate anchovies marinated in oil and parsley and garlic, and watched TV and talked. (I was too young to drink wine, but she had a night cap of brandy pretty regularly) Even as a teenager, my friends would come over my grandmother's apartment and we'd play pokeno and eat fried dough with salt on it. So, I think that's where I learned to appreciate just sitting around, eating, and talking with good friends and family. If she had a porch, she definitely would have been on it. Enjoy spending time with your sweet grandmother, Bobby.

And those of us who love the porch (that means you, too, Miss Critter), will have to have a porch fest some day.

so you are talking about N. J.?

I had one of the most wonderful experiences there. A friend and I drove down from Manhattan for a weekend; we wanted to relax away from the city for a few days. It was the week after Christmas--we got settled in late and the next morning woke up to snow everywhere!
The locals told us it was the first time in 50 years that Cape May had snow of that magnitude. Everything was covered--roads were closed; stores were closed, etc., etc. We ended up snowed in for three days! It was wonderful.
Somewhere I have the pictures of the beautiful victorian houses with the wide porches all covered in snow. Beautiful.

America's oldest seaside resort, and supposedly an influence to R. Davis when planning Seaside. I went there every summer of my life until I was about 20. No place like it anywhere.

You have the best stories about Cape May, especially about your grandmother.

Thanks to all for getting this thread back on amtrack!

I'd like to go back to Anguilla, Paris, Lake Como, Alaska, Canada, and the coast of Italy...(actually any place in Italy...maybe I should go with Paula!) Of course, that means lots of packing and airplane rides.

Miss Kitty: have you read the article on Italy in the May issue of More magazine?

not about Florence. I have not finished it yet, but basically it is about the coastal areas--two college roommates who studied Italian together--and their trip back with their families when they are in their forties.
good read.

Oh no. Not a lot of packing. We now pack for two weeks in one carry-on bag and a backpack (both on wheels). It works well. We carry the bags on when we're going somewhere and then sometimes check them in on the way back if we buy something (which we don't do much anymore). We pack a small cloth bag with a zipper as an extra bag (by Totes) in case we need an extra bag on the way back. I'm full of carry-on baggage tricks and when I buy clothes I almost always ask whether they're going to fold up really small in a carry-on!
