Basically I was trying to make scalloped potatoes and the mandolin slipped.

Here's the patch up job by my doctor before he gave up and sent me to the ER.

Here's the thumb soaking, you can actually see the arteries I hit.

They cauterized it and gave me a wash cloth to bite on, no pain killers whatsoever. Not only did I lift a nurse and a doctor with one arm, I left a perfect caste of my teeth in the washcloth.

This is how you wrap a throbbing thumb.

I would be sticking with the Betty Crocker ones after that. OUCH! Hope it gets better soon!

Been there, done that. My thumb on my left hand has a small section out on the tip where there is no longer any feeling.
Probably not the last time either...

most chefs won't use them because of the extremely high and frequent risk of slicing off finger tips. I heard enough horror stories about them to never want to buy one.

A friend of mine did the exact same thing. I guess I forgot to send you the memo!

I've done the same thing but did not actually slice anything OFF. but it was a bad slice! the mandoline is so great for some things. you cannot be in a hurry. Focus is key.

Laying it flat and jamming it doesn't help too much either. ;-)
