My bad, those must be different companies by the same name that own both. Oh, perhaps you can remind me where the Walton Sun's printing presses are again?

The Sun and the News Herald are SISTER papers. They are both owned by
Freedom Communications. The News Herald is not a parent company, but rather is "headquarters" you might say for Florida Freedom. Many papers are printed there, not just Freedom papers.
Hope that's cleared up.

Welcome and thanks. Unlike Scooterbug44, I get the Sun religiously every Saturday and read it cover to cover. It is a great little newspaper with columnists like Tom McGee, Ron Hart, Buz Livingston and many, many others that are good and quite readable. I am glad to hear from what I assume is a "reliable source" that the office is NOT closing and the Sun will continue on Saturdays. BTW, rumors on SoWal lately have been rampant and, for the most part, unreliable. What's going on, anyway?

I agree Andy A. that the Walton Sun is a wonderful paper. I truly do depend on reading it from cover to cover every week.

however, the rumors are based on fact but apparently we do not have our facts straight. we do know that staff has been layed off and we've been told that HQ is moving to Panama City, to cut overhead costs. other than that, we really do not know the whole story.

if anyone has the scoop, will you please let us know the whole story? I know sowallers are always helpful and want to share good and reliable information, keeping our community as informed as possible. thank you!

The Sun used to feature stories about me wherein I was lucky enough to make the front page for many weeks. The same reporter every time. Always the retraction would make it to a very small little note not quite as conspicuous as the original story.

The last time he wrote a story he called me to come in and give me an opportunity to respond. I went to his office at the Sun, sat at his desk and just before the interview I took out a recorder of my own and started the Recording. He protested to Gwen Break, who was most favorable to me. He undertook the questions in protest while I recorded and he essentially shelfed the story.

If you are ever, ever, ever, ever going to speak to the press remember to bring a recorder of your own. Be sure to show it to the interviewer so you don't step on their rights. You can be sure the story will be more in context.

The reporter left the Sun and had success and landed a job at the AP. We became somewhat of friends. I saw him at a gas station years later and I had a chance to talk with him in the real world. He said, "C'mon John. You gotta understand, this is a small town with nothing going on. I had to make some news."

Last I heard he got Antonin Scalia to make some remarks I bet he wished he hadn't made. Wherever he is I am confident he is doing well. If you ask Gwen she'll tell you he probably could have landed a job at Saturday Night Live.

The Walton Sun - the story

this helps clear up some confusion... in today's edition of The Walton Sun.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

The times, they are a changin?

By Gwen Break Sun editor

This week we begin a new chapter in The Walton Sun?s history. Beginning with today?s paper, all the layout and printing has been done at our sister paper, the Panama City News Herald.
This transition to a hub location will be undertaken by all the newspapers in Florida Freedom.
This move allows the papers to consolidate many tasks and thereby reduce operating costs.
There?s no question times are tough and just like our many customers, The Sun has undergone a reduction in business which has resulted in a reduction of staff.
We are confident good times will come again and these changes in operation do not indicate a change in the mission of The Sun and hopefully, no change to the service we provide our readers and advertisers.
The most noticeable difference will be in the design of the paper. Many of the style elements of the paper ? cutlines, bylines, the way stories and headlines are displayed ? have been changed to streamline the layout process for all the papers.

The other significant change is editorial deadlines. Last minute changes and additions simply cannot be accommodated in the same way. Unless it is breaking news, all press releases, photos and other newspaper contributions must be in our office at least 10 days before the publication date, but please understand that your contributions are more important to us than ever.
Our office remains open and our staff ready to serve the Walton County community, Monday ? Friday, at 790 CR 393N.
