How does one go about backing up the telephone lines on a alarm system? I had thought an emergency signal was sent to the alarm dispatcher when the line was cut?

Install a hidden telephone line? :dunno: I doubt that the the alarm sends an emergency signal when the line goes dead, because when one goes out, usually an entire neighborhood, or larger area is without phone lines.

Today, the best security, other than a weapon, is probably cameras installed, linked to the internet, where you can receive a cell phone call when motion is detected. Then, the camera's recording will be displayed on your cell phone, and you can call 911, and be able to give descriptions of the burglars.

One other way is to possess nothing of value, and learn how to defend yourself and your family. Big dogs which are capable of barking loudly or biting, would also think some burglars think twice about choosing your home. There are other tips that would help and easy to do (eg- removing bushes around the house so that buglars cannot hide, motion lights, make home visible from road, hide extra keys to autos and home in case someone does break in, install a floor mounted safe and use it for checks and jewelry etc.

All good points SJ. I will be calling my security company Monday to see lf there are backup options. I had thought that if the line was cut it would react as a broken circuit and the loss of signal might trigger something in the alarm dispatcher's office. Sounds like that may not be the case......

I do know that the dispatcher gets a signal for low battery when the backup power battery goes bad. Incredibly, I received a call from the dispatcher last fall when the battery was going bad!!!

I've heard stats that report something like 85% of home security alarms are false alarms, so I doubt that the police get all excited when they are called to check out an alarm. There are many ways to secure your property which don't involve sending a paycheck to some alarm company in another state.

At a business I managed, I ran a quarterly test of our alarm companies. I say companies, because we fired more than one. With the lack of speed of the monitoring company, I'd been up to my armpits in trouble, if there was a threatening predator breaking in, long before the alarm companies ever called back to confirm the alarm. I was surprised at how the companies rarely stuck to the plan of us having to give them a code word for distress or to indicate no problem. Most often, they never called the police, even if we didn't give the alarm operator the code for all good. I think the quickest response time by the police or fire dept was something like 20 minutes, from the time the alarm sounded, and typically, it took 15 minutes for the alarm company to call us, which they were to do prior to calling the police or fire dpt.

IMO, most alarm companies are not worth the money. Use that money to buy and use good locks and safes, and focus on locking windows and doors, hiding valuables, keys, identity, backing up computer files, etc.

Back in the late 80's they were installing BACK UP cellular....if phone land line became inoperable/cut, the cell phone automatically took over for the security system....it was all in a special locked box in a hidden safe area (maybe a closet).....in the event of a home invasion, the owner would also be able to hopefully lock up in the closet and call for help....I imagine the technology has far surpassed this by now, but at the time it was very reassuring to some high profile types knowing they had a plan B....

We added backup cellular after our home invasion, as well as other backups that I won't reveal, plus motion detectors all around the property. The thing is, by the time police get to your house, you'd be dead if a home invader wanted to harm you. That's why I have guns in a lock box in the bedroom.

One of our neighbors built a safe room. Even I am not paranoid enough to do that. LOL. But then her house is pretty high profile (12,000 square feet), so if I were a burglar betting on where I could get the most loot, that house would be it.

I am very skeptical about "religious" people ringing our doorbell and trying to "save" us. (I am also really tired of them bothering me by ringing the doorbell and me having to deal with them. I never open the door for fear that they'll overpower me and rush in to rob us.) Almost every Sunday we play in the strings group at the big Methodist church in town, so they don't need to save us, thank you very much (even though we can't totally buy into the virgin birth story  ). They mostly visit at times when one is likely to be out of town (school holidays, summer, etc.), so we think they are casing the house to see if we're gone and can rob us (as many of you know, we've already had one home invasion). I posted a sign on the sidelights by our front door:

GET OFF OUR PROPERTY!
UNLESS YOU ARE A FRIEND,
FAMILY, OR USPS/UPS/FEDEX,
YOU ARE TRESPASSING!
DO NOT BOTHER US BY
RINGING THE DOORBELL!
WE HAVE A GUN, AND
WE KNOW HOW TO USE IT!

This might work too.
