Upgraded security is good. Make your place less desireable. Lots of lights, outside, ours are on sensors when it gets dark they come on.

Timers inside that come on at dark in case you are not home yet.

Security doors, as you stated. We have them on all doors, we bought the kind with a bank type locking system.

You can also get a fake dog, that barks.

Thieves want a dark home with easy access. Also secure things such as video equipment in your home less easy to pick up quickly and run. Not much you can do about your TV, it is going to be able to be found.

We also have a very large safe, where we store heirlooms and non replaceable items.

Police usually only dust for fingerprints on murder crimes, not robberies. Unless it is bank or such as that.

Usually as you said, recycle bins, mail still in the box, yes they look, lights not on, etc gives away when you are not home. Plus thieves will canvas a neighborhood sometimes and watch to see when people come and go before they break in.

Alarm systems are great, make sure they give you plenty of signs for your yard and put one near the street so anyone driving by can see it.

We also have them on the windows.

Also everyone make sure you know the people who install your security system. Dishonest companies actually will have someone break into your home, hoping to get your business. Also they do have access to the system, so do your homework before purchasing one.

our new security company is owned by a neighbor that I've been friendly with for several years now so I feel good about him; hubby's going to buy a floor mount safe for valuables and bolt it in a closet, until then, my stuff is at my mom's bank box. It seems crazy to have to take these steps but you've gotta do what you've gotta do.

I grew up in the country where we never locked our back door, my mom's upset and disbelief because this make twice that we've had our home broken into and my brother's apartment was broken into twice a couple of years ago.

I'd like to electrify our windows and doors, shock the hell out of burglars and unwanted solicitors alike!!!

One other tidbit based n my experience with breakins. Police advised me not to leave any identifiable packing material outside my home as I replace stolen items. He told me this stype of home burgler will drive by locations of previous burglaries, looking for signs you have replaced stolen items and hit again soon later. I did not know about Facebook but thanks for the heads up. We just spent the week running from the snow here and I had posted to family not worry, we had gone out of town. Guess the burglers couldn't get in either. Hurry up warm weather. As soon as I can I want to get to Grayton....

I heard on television that it is a bad idea for anyone to leave cardboard boxes from large purchases in plain view outside, because it is an invitation to theft. They suggested cutting the cardboard up into pieces and pushing it down in your trash can.

Or better yet, take the cardboard to a recycling center. We keep putting off doing that with all of the boxes we have from online Christmas shopping.

No cardboard? Wow. Ours doesn't take styrofoam, and I hate to put it in the trash because it's so environmentally unfriendly.

If it's packing foam peanuts, packing stores will gladly take it.
