Upgraded security is good. Make your place less desireable. Lots of lights, outside, ours are on sensors when it gets dark they come on.
Timers inside that come on at dark in case you are not home yet.
Security doors, as you stated. We have them on all doors, we bought the kind with a bank type locking system.
You can also get a fake dog, that barks.
Thieves want a dark home with easy access. Also secure things such as video equipment in your home less easy to pick up quickly and run. Not much you can do about your TV, it is going to be able to be found.
We also have a very large safe, where we store heirlooms and non replaceable items.
Police usually only dust for fingerprints on murder crimes, not robberies. Unless it is bank or such as that.
Usually as you said, recycle bins, mail still in the box, yes they look, lights not on, etc gives away when you are not home. Plus thieves will canvas a neighborhood sometimes and watch to see when people come and go before they break in.
Alarm systems are great, make sure they give you plenty of signs for your yard and put one near the street so anyone driving by can see it.
We also have them on the windows.
Also everyone make sure you know the people who install your security system. Dishonest companies actually will have someone break into your home, hoping to get your business. Also they do have access to the system, so do your homework before purchasing one.
