poppy, just because a true life story hasn't been written about in the newspaper, doesn't mean it cannot be supported. Back when I was in high school working for a contractor in the paper mill, me and other classmates who worked there were harassed daily by union workers, one who was our football coach, as they tried to make us join the union. We were summer laborers and not interested in joining the union. Again, you didn't see us running to the newspaper to talk of the abuse. We wanted to keep our high-paying jobs, and didn't want to be sitting on the sidelines at the football games.

I doubt it was McDonalds direct, but rather the contracting company who hires staff, inclusive of illegal immigrants (they can't vote anyway). This keeps McDonalds records clean and out of trouble.

Intimidation by the GOP? No way.

What? Illegal immigrants cannot vote?

from same article:
"Most such "sanctuary cities" are in heavily Democratic states, populated by a majority of minorities (who are largely Democratic Party constituents). Within this voting bloc are millions of illegal immigrants deliberately held in abeyance in our country until needed at election time. These illegal immigrants are shielded from prosecution in the sanctuaries until amnesty is granted to them under the guise of the immigration reform bill, giving these lawbreakers the right to vote.

Government officials in these cities are themselves violating the existing immigration law by not reporting to federal authorities the presence of these illegal immigrants in their states.

It is evident that there is a coordinated effort among local, state and federal governments with Democratic Party majorities not to prosecute illegal immigrants or minority constituencies who break laws. It's a matter of political expediency.

These facts, coupled with Mr. Obama's startling statement that securing the borders will not happen until his immigration bill has passed, paint a frightful and dangerous picture of a country in fast decline toward totalitarianism, led by an incompetent but committed ideologue who places political advantage before his presidential duty to protect America's citizens."

It turns out that Obama's Acorn has something to do with illegal immigrants voting.

From FactCheck.org:
Here's what is true: In recent years, ACORN employees have been investigated multiple times for voter registration fraud. ACORN workers have been convicted of submitting false voter registration forms in Colorado Springs in 2005, Kansas City, Mo., in 2006 and King County, Wash., in 2007. ACORN's Las Vegas office was raided by a state criminal investigator on Oct. 7, 2008. ACORN workers are also the subjects of ongoing investigations in Wisconsin, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. The Indiana investigation started in early October and may involve thousands of fraudulent registration forms...."

"...Investigator Hayes followed up, confirmed that many registrations were faked, and found a former ACORN worker who confessed to faking most of her forms. After obtaining a warrant based on the affidavit, state officials seized records and computers. Secretary of State Ross Miller was quoted as saying the faked forms included names from the starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys.

While ACORN says that such raids are part of "a systematic partisan agenda of voter suppression," it is worth noting that in this case, Secretary of State Miller is a Democrat."

The union analogy doesn't hold up at all, since the purpose of unions is to protect labor from management. In this case, management is trying to twist labor's arm. What's ridiculous is what kind of leverage do they think they have against low wage earners working at jobs they'd rather not be doing?

I'm curious what recourse these employees have if in fact after those candidates are elected they don't receive the additional raises they were promised?

BTW, offering a raise for a vote is bribery and vote buying.

Why is it everytime someone says something they have learned from experience, education but is not quoted from the N.Y Times or Washington Post, it is assumed by "some" to be untrue.
Let me tell you a true life story, one that happened to me and the main reason I abhor unions at this point in time.
In 1949 and 50, I was a steelworker for the CF&I in Pueblo, Colo. I had to belong to the union in order to hold a job. It was a "closed shop" operation. I decided since I had to belong to the union it was my obligation to participate in its functions and meetings.
At the first meeting I attended, the leader of the union and moderator of the meeting brought up a "change" he and the leadership thought would be good for the membership, and no, I don't remember what it was, but I stood up, was recognized and questioned it. Being a naive, college student between semesters I deem that my right. The leader of the union, after asking me why I was questioning my leadership, told me to sit down and shut up. I asked him why it couldn't be discussed. At this juncture, he said "Sgt. at arms escort that man from the room" and I was summarily escorted out of the union meeting.
Could this be an isolated incident? Certainly it could but it is my firm opinion to this day that it isn't. The leadership, in many cases, I believe tell union members what to do and how to do it. Oh, and the results of the overly aggressive union in Pueblo? A few years later CF&I closed the mill, which had been in operation for decades, according to friends, at least partly due to union demands.

So your entire opinion of unions is based on an experience from the Hoffa era of unions?

My experience with a union was at Bell South. During the orientation the HR manager simply said that a union rep was coming in. A very nice, un-intimidating, and soft spoken woman came in to explain the union. She said verbatim that we did not need to join the union, but our raises and level of pay were negotiated by the union. I chose to join so that I would have a voice in negotiations. I never met a guido who was there to "change my mind" and of course I had to pay my union dues, wait for it and you might want to sit down, $10.00 per year!

BTW, Bellsouth has above average starting pay for this area and one of the few companies with a union.

Does this mean that if I claimed all Tea Party candidates were lying wacked out A-holes it would be true even though I can't support it?

From the same source, FactCheck.org, parts you failed to include:

There's no evidence of any such democracy-destroying fraud.

But so far ACORN itself has not been officially charged with any fraud. Aside from the heated charges and counter-charges, no evidence has yet surfaced to show that the ACORN employees who submitted fraudulent registration forms intended to pave the way for illegal voting. Rather, they were trying to get paid by ACORN for doing no work. Dan Satterberg, the Republican prosecuting attorney in King County, Wash., where the largest ACORN case to date was prosecuted, said that the indicted ACORN employees were shirking responsibility, not plotting election fraud. Satterberg: [A] joint federal and state investigation has determined that this
scheme was not intended to permit illegal voting.

Election fraud does exist, but hasn't been shown to be widespread. The New York Times reported in 2007 that a five-year crackdown on such fraud by the Bush administration's Justice Department had produced 70 convictions at the federal level, including 40 campaign workers or government workers convicted of vote-buying, intimidation or ballot forgery, and 23 cases of multiple voting or voting by ineligible voters. But the Times described these as unconnected incidents and said the Justice Department had turned up no evidence of "any organized effort to skew federal elections."

Bush administration officials have pushed hard to find such evidence, too hard in one case, according to an investigation by the Department of Justice's internal watchdogs, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR). Their report into the firing of nine United States attorneys concluded that the "real reason" for the firing of New Mexico's U.S. Attorney David Iglesias was "complaints about Iglesias?s handling of voter fraud and public corruption matters." The complaints included gripes by state Republican Party officials who believed that widespread fraud by Democrats had prevented George Bush from winning the state in the 2000 presidential election. Iglesias launched a task force that worked with the FBI but found that "there was insufficient evidence in any of the cases the Task Force reviewed to support criminal prosecution by the [U.S. Attorney's Office] or state authorities," according to the report of the OIG and OPR. These included cases involving ACORN workers. Republicans charged that Iglesias was showing insufficient rigor in prosecuting the cases.

On the other hand.

Going to college I worked a union joint and a non-union joint sucessive summers.

The union joint is still rocking and rolling and the non-union joint is shuttered.

We were hired so the company could stockpile inventory for a proposed strike.

No one gave us any problem...we just were paid less.

Except for the time the Sheriff's brother (foreman) sifted through about a hundred checks (showing me how much more everyone else was paid) before he gave me mine.

The union joint was the first time I was paid while on convalescent leave due to a job injury.

There two sides to every stocry.

Of course there is. But it would seem that "some" on this board refuse to accept any that doesn't jibe with their thoughts and experiences.
