This weekend was pretty terrible. I came very close to losing my little dachshund, Ellie. She was very sick and her liver was failing. After wonderful treatment at Gulf Winds Animal Hospital (north side of 79/98 intersection in PCB, I can't say enough good things about them) she will be able to come home later this morning.

When I was discussing her diet with the vet, I was told we may have to switch her diet from the prescription food she has been eating to one that is a more healthy/pure source of protein. She said her first choice was venison and asked if I had any hunters in the family. I immediately have a mental picture of Skunky in an Elmer Fudd outfit -- no, no hunters. The alternative choice of protein source was white fish, which Ellie won't eat.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about how I might be able to acquire venison? And please don't suggest I go hunting, I don't have the proper footwear! ;-)

Glad Ellie is doing better. Maybe you could call the wildlife officers in your area for suggestions.

I am sorry for your terrible weekend and I am glad to hear she is coming home. Did you talk to the vet about certain cuts of beef that have almost as much protein as venison?

Call around to the grocery stores- I have seen venison in freezer sections. Fresh Market may have it too.

(I put a little hunter smiley here, but he's hiding. Daddy-O?)

There are a couple of deer on the side of the road between here and school, but I'm afraid they have turned bad already. :dunno:\

p.s. Punzy, I'm sorry your little one is sick...

OH NO! Poor Ellie. I can find her some venison. My sister has some in her freezer that she'll gladly part with. However, we won't be there until NYE. As soon as our house's floors are ready, I'll ask around to see who is making a trip and see if we can't get some to little Ellie. In the meantime, hopefully someone local can help you out! Ellie is the sweetest little dog ever and needs to have good food to eat!!

I need to clarify this with the vet later, but I think she meant that the protein needed to come from the wild -- something about the natural diet of the deer making the protein more pure, nothing for her liver to have to break down.

That won't work, Ellie follows the Kabballah. :D

Thank you! Thank you! Funny, you were the last person I'd have thought to ask.

And thanks everyone for their kind words about Ellie.

Punz...I think jdarg is correct about some of the stores...call around, also, are there any coobeedoo pet stores around that might have a source?
