That is what I call a "no-brainer," but I have a feeling that 12" of snow and ice in Chicago is just another fall day.
Well it was a no brainer for us too, but no one else seemed to agree.

I should explain tho that we don't know where a lot of these teachers live, how far they have to drive, etc. The school is only about 1 mile away for us so we could make the trip. You don't know until it all unfolds what's going to happen, who's going to show, etc.

Well, last Friday when we got 12 inches of snow, high school was not canceled. And believe me, there was plenty of notice in the previous 24 hrs that the snow was coming. When we got up that a.m., about 6" had already fallen and we thought surely, school would be canceled. But it wasn't. So we got our son up, Mr. JR went out and shoveled/snowblowed just to get out of the driveway to take him to school. Niether one of us drove into work but worked from home computers. At 10:00, our son calls and said it was mass exodus with eveyone going back home - - none of his teachers were even there!!!!!! So the driveway had to be re-shoveled to be able to get out again. A real pain and we should've kept him home.

But the kicker to all this is last night we received an automated phone call from the school superintendent apologizing for his poor decision, the inconvenience and the risk that most took to try to get their kids to school.

This is an area that can easily handle a foot of snow and most do try to get to work but it can be treacherous. Not to mention, it can happen many times during a season so life goes on.

UGH, unbelievable.

Mango: Don't you get hit by Northeasterners' big time where you live?

Aquabiotic: A few inches of snow, unless it's really fresh or has ice under it, is not much for us to worry about. But staying home is a great idea when it is worse.

Kurt: Very bad! Bad bad.

Paula, my Aunt calls them North Easterns!
I think you meant Nor'easters! Occasionally we get them. One year, we had one late April when my tulips were halfway up. My County is also a series of peaks and valleys, so the snow accumulation varies from one town to the next. One school may be open and another closed.

When I first moved here, I thought I needed a closet for Paarmalat milk, but we know how to drive here in the snow, and everyone has at least front wheel drive or all wheel.

I would rather drive in snow than an ice storm. Black ice scares the bejeebers out of me.

I wish I could scan well to show pictures, because 13 years ago, when I first built my house, there was one major snow storm after another. I had a mountain, literally, about 15 ft high at the end of my driveway. The ice did not fully melt until mid May. I am serious.

audie, i know you loved it! It is very pretty. I hate the cold, but do love a little snow every now and then. That's about how often we get it it too....every now and then. Mostly then. :D

Whoa, that is a gorgeous photo. It does look like snow. The first year we visited Sowal I had a picture of Sam and Dylan taken in front of a dune at GBSP. People look at it all the time and ask...is that snow?
This photo does look so much like snow. We have 15 - 20 foot "dunes" of snow all over the parking lots around town here from the snow plows!
